Okay, I’m honestly doing this for shits and giggles and because I’m bored out of my mind but here we go. I (17F) was forced to go to PR for my great grandmas 90th birthday. For context, I’ve met this lady once when I was 7, never spoke to her/saw her after. She didn’t even remember me or my dad. My parents have this funny habit of planning trips and the telling me last minute and I’m just supposed to be okay with it. Like I get they’re my parents and I’m supposed to listen to them but I’m so sick and tired of this.
I’m a junior in high school right now, which if you didn’t know, is arguably one of the most important years before college. I have AP classes that I need to pass, a GPA to perfect, extracurriculars, you get the idea. My parents decided to make us leave on a Thursday and we aren’t coming back until Monday. I know maybe that sounds like not too much school to miss, but 3 days is a lot when you have 3 APs and professional electives. I had to miss one of my AP mock exams because we left before I could take it and it’s a grade, which means I need to stay for 3 HOURS AFTER SCHOOL TO TAKE IT. There’s so many other things that fell through because of this plan I was not even made aware of but I’ll spare you the details. The point is my parents are so inconsiderate.
I asked my mom why she couldn’t just go by herself because it’s her grandma. She said she would have but my dad apparently wanted to take a vacation, so it became a family thing. I might be the asshole because my mom said I’m ruining it for her because I’m stressed and have a bad attitude about the trip and I just sat in the corner at the party yesterday and didn’t talk to anyone. But I feel like I’m justified like it’s not as sentimental to me as it is for my mom. I don’t care if some lady is turning 90, she could be turning 1000 and I wouldn’t care. I have a lot of school work that I have to catch up on because I’m missing school, I don’t like coming to PR because of the heat, bugs, and lack of AC in most of the houses (including the one I had to spend 7 hours in yesterday ), and I’m honestly worried about my grades tanking again like they did the last time we took an impromptu trip I didn’t want to go on. AITA?
Edit: someone told me I should add this but my family in PR is incredibly rude. They make fun of me for pretty much everything. My Spanish, my hair (it’s curly so labeled “messy”), the way I dress, etc. it’s just overall very unpleasant to be around them for any length of time.
