AITA for complaining about our spring break hotel?

AITA I’m currently a college student trying to go on a spring break trip with my friends next week. One of my friends found a cheap hotel and it only cost 92$ dollars per person for the week. There is also 6 of us going on this trip and for context we are planning to go to florida. I originally brought up to my friends i would prefer to stay in a more expensive hotel since the one we currently have booked looks like a motel and doesn’t have the best reviews. My friends said they didn’t want to pay extra and worse case scenario we complain to the front desk for a new room. Plus they stated we would barely be in the hotel room besides sleeping. Which i could see as them being correct but the hotel is older and we are going during a busy time so i doubt we would have many options in changing rooms. I was also reading the reviews for the hotel again and I saw a couple people complain about finding cockroaches in their hotel room, but those are also older reviews from a year ago. I’m currently unsure if I should withdraw from the trip or if I should try to enjoy the trip and worse case scenario book another hotel room if our hotel rooms are terrible. AITA?

  1. you’re definitely not the AH for wanting a better place, bro. if you’re gonna be paying to stay somewhere, it should at least meet some basic standards. either try to talk to your friends again about upgrading or just keep your options open if the place ends up being a dump.

  2. NTA, just go and if you’re uncomfortable once you’re there, find alternative living spaces for yourself. maybe make a cancellable booking on a hotel for the next night, so if it turns out fine you can cancel it and if it doesn’t, you have a place to go

  3. NTA but why? If you anyways just plan to sleep there, then nothing stops you from booking a better hotel. And you can just meet your friends at the activity you plan. I don’t really get why to start a drama over this? (Even cancelling the whole trip?)

  4. You’re young. Save money. Go have fun. You definitely don’t get to decide that everyone else has to pay more for your issues here. There are perfectly fine motels all over. None of you are making 4+ star money so you don’t get to have 4+ star service.

  5. I am leaning towards YTA, depending on how you pulling out will affect the cost for everyone else.

To note, that there are six people on this trip. Five are perfectly happy with the hotel choice and have a budget in mind.

You wanting to move everyone to a more expensive hotel or threaten to pull out, so close to the trip. Feels like a bit of an asshole move.

Especially as all you are basing this on are reviews from a year ago!

  6. NTA but I think you may prefer a better lifestyle such as fine linen sheets, the smell of mahogany and asking the front desk if they have any Grey Poupon.

  7. It’s Florida. We get bugs. Most roach reports in reviews are actually palmetto bugs. They are scarier bc they fly and don’t squish. Get hair spray, that takes them out. But the fact is we are going into our rainy season and that’s when they tend to get indoors. It’s one of two. Not an infestation.

You can always find somewhere else if it’s that bad.

Most people who review, only do so to complain. People who had good experiences tend to just go about life.

I’m not saying this is going to be a great place. But it’s within budget for the rest of your group. Unless if you are willing to eat the increased cost of everyone, give it a try.

Once you knew you weren’t happy with the place, did you look for something within the agreed upon budget? Did you voice your concerns before booking? If you were going to pull out, then was the time, if your concerns were ignored. If you do pull out and don’t pay your portion, YTA, as you agreed to the trip. It’s too close to the trip to find another person. You can always find someone to go in your place. Or at least try.

But seriously, be prepared for those palmetto bugs. Inside and out. Had one the size of the fist hit my screen the other night. They are harmless.

  8. NTA

Bring roach motels. Look at whatever else you can mitigate.

See if you can find a better place for a similar price. Let everyone know you are seaeching. Also, see if someone wants to take your place.

Sometimes it is the city and not the accomodations. My husband and I went to Florida to a lovely resort. I saw what they call a “water bug” and called the front desk. The Floridians thought those were just fine and nothing to fear. If your destination city features bugs then the hotel won’t matter.

  9. Sounds like a pretty standard florida spring break hotel room to me. Embrace the experience. Also even nice hotels near the beach in Florida are going to end ip with the occasional palmetto bug or cockroach….comes with the climate

  10. NAH, yall just want different things. Your friends are dumb though for saying they can complain and ask for a different room. All the rooms will be pretty much the same lol.

  11. INFO: have you done any work to research alternatives within everyone’s budget or are you just complaining because you don’t like the accommodations someone else planned?
