I (20M) have this professor who teaches one of my required courses. At first he just seemed kind of awkward, he started asking me to “drop by his office” even when I didn’t need help. The first time I went, he kept asking weirdly personal questions (if I live alone, if I’m “social,” if I’m seeing anyone, etc.). I brushed it off.
The last straw was when he suggested we meet “somewhere off campus where we won’t be interrupted.” That made my stomach drop. No academic reason. No project. Just “to connect.”
I didn’t reply. I reported it to the department because the whole thing felt off.
So now I’m wondering if I jumped the gun.
AITA for reporting him?
Prof here.
You are NTA. Because not only was your professor inappropriate – s/he KNEW it. It isn’t 1950. All of us know that it is inappropriate to hit on a student, and that is clearly what is going on here.
Also a prof and yeah, this is gross. We’re not all like that. I’m glad you reported them.
At the Uni I worked at it was forbidden by code of conduct
Coffee chats are often totally normal, but professors don’t usually request them. Coffee chats are requested from professors, and have a purpose. Questions about grad school, asking about their lab, research, letters of rec, etc. Checking vibe to see if you want that person to be your advisor for grad school, etc.
You don’t just… ask an undergrad for a coffee chat just because. Coffee chats are totally normal but never requested by the professor.
