This happened a few weeks ago but I decided I’d tell this now.
Two weeks ago my boss (43m) sent me (27m) an email which I found out later he sent to the rest of the office. He made us aware that the coffee brand the company buys us is no longer being provided. We all got quite enraged as the brand we are given isn’t even expensive (around $6 per 100g) we are not a big company with about 15 staff total. We have each tried to make attempts to persuade him against it but he really won’t budge.
After a week with a completely coffee less staff thing started to get tense, many pointed out that this simple purchase made the office feel more like a family of sorts that the community accepted was a good touch, but no matter what we said he wouldn’t budge on his stance. Me and my roommate (28m) who we will call mathew, decided it was time to be petty.
For some background our boss drinks EXPENSIVE coffee and has never let anyone taste it before. I’ve found out it’s about 110ish dollars for his instant coffee. He constantly raves about his "perfectly smooth instant coffee” and we all have become sick of it. Me and Mathew went to the supermarket and brought a tub of what we’d normally be provided and waited for my next shift. Our shift starts don’t line up so it was all on me to complete what we called the great coffee hist.
On Monday i came into work 20 minutes before he was scheduled to arrive and snuck into his office and switched the coffee. It was a fresh container. By the looks of it he had only had one drink. I switched the coffee powder between the containers, so he believed that i had brought in my own one from home but really i took his…
Later that morning i went in to conveniently chat to him to see how the coffee was treating him and it turns out HE LOVED IT. He told me that he didn’t know what happened, but it got better overnight!! I had to practically run out of there to stop myself from laughing in his face.
I found Matthew to tell him what happened and him and the other colleagues around were dubbed over in laughter. But some kept calling me a asshole?
AITA for stealing his coffee? And would I be if i did it again.
EDIT: for extra background that i forgot to add, yes the price is 113 but nzd its this particular brand (moccona smooth) so 63ish usd. This is his humor and he will find it funny but im planning on getting him a new tub and some chocolates (helped by the comments)
if this happened, this doesn’t end well for you
I have serious doubts about this story – the writer (or AI) seems to have no knowledge about instant coffee. It’s not just taste or expense that’s different – the grain size and colour are different between brands. Not just a small variation, but immediately obvious differences.
And also, instant coffee that’s over $100.00? It seems… improbable. I looked it up, and the closest I could get to that cost (US$) is an eight-pack of high-quality six-serving instant coffees.
It’s probably a 12 year old with a new account inventing stuff that makes no sense. He doesn’t even know how much a kg of average coffee costs
Don’t ever trust anyone at work.
Yeh stealing is stealing
Yeah i wont be doing it again
I can understand wanting to be petty. But I don’t get the connection between swapping his coffee and how that does anything about the lack of common coffee
Unless you’re selling his $100 coffee on the black market and using the profit to buy a few canisters of the regular stuff?
I’d say swapping others food or drink is a reason for getting fired, if not charged. You’re not a person to be trusted in any sense
YTA obviously.
YTA for making this story up. And if this did actually happen, you’re still the AH for (1) stealing someone’s property, and (2) making someone eat or drink something without their knowledge and consent. Doesn’t matter what it is or why — you don’t tamper with another person’s food or drink, period.
YTA
Is this a small business? Is he like the owner? Because if he isn’t you are a even bigger AH. A boss doesn’t get to control a companies petty funds. Corporate does that. And if it is a small business then as sad as it sounds sometimes those struggle and don’t have petty funds. Go find another job because if you get caught your fired and you will get caught because this whole thing screams petty and not smart.
Pro tip – to make your lies convincing, you should research the topic you’re lying about.
$110 dollar instant coffee?
Come on.
Rather than being gracious for their generosity for years, you are “enraged” that you’re no longer being given a free gift. Entitlement much? Not to mention the criminal aspect.
Yeah, YTA, big time.
