AITA for reporting my neighbour after he kicked off at me on the stairs about his dog barking again?

About a week ago I asked my neighbour if he could keep an eye on his dog because it had been barking nonstop and I was knackered. He acted like I’d properly offended him, so I left it.

Earlier I bumped into him on the stairs while the dog was at it again. Before I said a word he went, “What, complaining again?” in this smug little tone. We had a quick back and forth. He said dogs bark and I should get over it, I said I’d quite like some sleep for once. Nothing dramatic, just petty.

I ended up reporting it to building management because I didn’t know what else to do. Now he’s slamming doors and giving me dirty looks every time he walks past.

Did I make a big deal out of nothing, or would anyone lose it after a week of constant barking? AITA?

  1. NTA – I have a dog who does bark but only if he feels something is off but in the night, We do everything we can to keep him quiet. During the day not much can be done but quiet hours yeah. Call your non emergency police line if you have one, say you are hearing a lot of banging around which isn’t normal, they’ll come check it out/

    1. The problem with that is that if the police go to his flat and just find a barking dog unless its extremely obvious that the dog is being mistreated i would be wasting police time. noise complaints are not something that they often enforce unfortunately.

Even worse is if the police show up and find him with drugs or something he shouldn’t have, and I dont want to be responsible for an arrest, unless its for animal neglect

im gonna have to monitor the situation more, I guess I have no choice since its all I can hear.

  2. You can look into local noise ordinances. I’m
Sure you can probably file a complaint instead of dealing with him.

Look up legally what you can do since you tried the be nice and ask them to help out.

I worry about a dog that barks all the time. Yes dogs bark, but if it’s excessive he or she is alone a lot or ignored.

    1. im in the uk so there’s not really anything I could do legally. I’m considering calling animal welfare to do a check in but I feel like I need to give him another chance to look after his dog better.

  3. NTA, report his attitude of now causing more disturbances by slamming doors and making noise on purpose, and if his dog is still barking non stop also tell them he hasn’t done anything to change the behavior. You’re a neighbor, not a roomie that has to put up with their shit, it’s not your fault they’re lazy.

  4. Info, please

Is this an apt building or houses next to each other? Is the dog barking all day/night? Does it bark when the owner’s home or only when they’re at work? Does the barking bother other tenants & have they also lodged complaints? Do you do shift work & sleep during the daytime?

  5. NTA- People who are like this don’t understand the boundaries of others and when you live around many people they should. Also no matter what someone says dogs shouldn’t be barking all day long unless it’s really unhappy or something is really wrong. That poor puppy needs training of some sort and the neighbor really should consider they don’t live in a house alone but an apartment surrounded by people. Also you weren’t rude about it at all just asked nicely and simply reciprocated the energy he gave you on the stairwell. Best of luck OP I know it’s frustrating.

    1. yeah I mean idk what his flat is like but most of them here are pretty small. im worried about the dog tbf, ive seen it a couple of times and it doesn’t seem aggressive or anything just very loud :/
