AITA for refusing to pick up dog poo that wasn’t mine?

FYI, I’m 17M.

Our street had its annual Christmas party a couple of days ago, and as usual there were a bunch of families and dogs in attendance. Our family brought our Aussie cattle dog along and there were easily in excess of 12 dogs all running around the backyard at the event.

I happened to be the last guest there because I had ducked off to take a leak as everyone was heading off and so my family left without me. When I was done I noticed a few empty cans littered around the backyard so gathered them all into a pile for the host to make their life a bit easier.

The host came out and said thanks, and then asked if I could clean up the dog poo on the lawn. The host didn’t have dogs, and therefore had none of the equipment (baggies, shovel, etc.) and I didn’t really love the idea of doing it with a tissue or whatever. Plus, there were at least eight piles of poo including two gigantic landmines that I did not want to touch, that I’m assuming were left by one of the guests who had a Great Dane.

I thought they were joking at first so just said "nah that’s all you haha" and headed off but it turns out they told my parents I was "extremely rude". I was a bit puzzled but yeah essentially, AITA for not doing this?

  1. Just because you’re the last one there doesn’t make you responsible for the rest of the mess. You did some cleaning to help. You’re allowed to refuse specific jobs. If you help the host with the dishes, for example you’re allowed to say that you don’t agree to help with the vacuuming. You’re still helping and not being rude. You’re not doing a job.

  2. If it was me, I would have given them the poo bags, so that they didn’t have to use tissue and risk getting poo on their hands, but I not picking up after bad dog owners, and they’re who the host should be mad at, not you.

  3. Expecting a 17 year old to barehand eight mystery turds with no bags is wild behavior. If they wanted it cleaned they should have asked the actual dog owners or had supplies ready.

    1. It is wild behaviour. But so is going round to someone’s house with your dog and no poo picking equipment. OP should not have been asked to do it, but they should have had the the equipment.

      1. My understanding is the rest of the family left with the dog and presumably the equipment while OP was in the bathroom v

  4. NTA, at all. The owners should have been keeping track of that. To be honest, it’s a disaster waiting to happen to have a block party and 12 dogs running around, but I’ll side that. Even though if something bad had happened, it would be liable for the block/Christmas party owner.

It’s simply not on you to clean up after the dogs. They are abusing the privileges of being older than you it sounds like. VERY rude of them, and understandable you thought they were joking. That SHOULD have been a joke.

  5. What, they don’t have any plastic grocery bags or anything? I get not having a dog poo bag since they don’t have dogs, but even if they never ever shop anywhere with plastic bags, they didn’t even have a garbage bag to offer you?

NTA. What a fucking walnut of a homeowner.

    – invites a bunch of dog owners over and apparently does not communicate that they are expected to clean up after their dogs

    – also doesn’t get supplies to clean up on their own

    – asks a kid who doesn’t even live there, and also already did them a favor to raw dog some dog shit.

    Incredible logic from the host.

    Edit: typo

    1. >What, they don’t have any plastic grocery bags or anything?

      **New Jersey enters the chat.**

      >- invites a bunch of dog owners over and apparently does not communicate that they are expected to clean up after their dogs

I’ll overlook the point that if I bring a baby to a party, I don’t expect the host to supply me with pampers, or more importantly, wipe MY kid’s butt.

Sorry, but this falls all over the owners. No one should EVER have to remind people that they are responsible for their mutt’s messes. “Oh, everyone was off leash. I didn’t see mine go…” Then maybe you shouldn’t have your walking shit factory with you.

If you aren’t one of “those” people, don’t get offended. If you are, you suck, and I hope it gets returned to your doorstep. Or your car…

  6. sooooo……what?………does she think that just because you’re a teen, that you get awarded the golden pooper scooper? Why you?

  7. NTA, but cleaning it up would have been really kind. My guess is the event won’t happen again, or at least canine companions will not be allowed.

    1. Eh, if 8-12 people ALL can’t be bothered to pick up after their dog, then dogs don’t belong at the event. I mean, really, the homeowner just needs better friends, but that won’t happen either.
