AITA: Received Embroidery Gift in Friends Gift Exchange

Am I the Asshole? We had a friends gift exchange and I spend over a month, many hours of time to make this time-consuming crochet stuffed gift that I knew my person would love, made with extra care and attention. When time came to exchange everyone was getting these multipart gifts with cool art pieces, elaborate figurines, or awesome D&D sets (as we play D&D together). And my person wouldn’t stop hugging their gift, I knew I nailed it. However the gift I received was an embroidery DIY kit. Not a completed craft or handmade art piece but a DIY kit purchased on Amazon… a craft I have expressed not liking in the past, and have mentioned previously that I dislike hand stitching as it was “the worse part of crocheting”. Not to mention this kit came with no intrusions, and my friend just kind of expected me to know how to do embroidery. The kit is an embroidery of a cat, “because I own a cat I must absolutely be in love with them right”. We had also made lists of what items we would like to receive and no where in my list did I ask for craft supplies, I asked for cooking utensils or something handmade. As I do have an already well supplied craft arsenal and many current crafts/hobbies my friends are aware of and “I don’t need more craft supplies”(mentioned this in my gift list). Am I the asshole for politely accepting the gift, making face and then going home and crying and complaining on Reddit? Or should I just be happy in received something even though it means more work for me… the one person in the friend group that has very little free time. How do I politely say thanks but I hate it, and did you not know who you were getting a gift for? Am I the asshole?

  1. You are NTA for every part except “making a face”.

This is the problem with group gift exchanges. Inevitably someone is going to be disappointed.

You say “Thank you very much.” And then everything else is inside thoughts.
