I got a job for the first time in a couple months and started on December 1st. It started out fine but it was a very scary and stressful start. I have been going through panic attacks and health anxiety for 2 years and thought maybe I would be able to handle it now
I was fine at first, working and living. Slight anxiety but was fine. My head started feeling off, I felt foggy and dizzy. I went into the doctor and got told that my eardrums have fluid behind them and that’s probably why.
I get prescribed prednisone and I have a TERRIBLE REACTION TO IT! The worst panic attacks I have ever experienced. I’ve almost gone to the er twice in the past 2 days and I feel terrible. Like full blown suck. My body hurts and I took my emergency meds (Xanax) but I’m still kinda anxious and don’t feel good at all.
I’ve called out twice due to this problem and my manager has kinda been an asshole about it.
AITAH if I take today to rest?
NTA. If you need to recover, you need to recover. Can you get the doctor to give you a sick note for a week or something?
I’m prob going to get downvoted for this but I think it’s
NAH
You need to take care of yourself and get your meds right. But your manager sees someone who started only 4 weeks ago and has called out 2, now 3, times already. Seeing as how you are hired to be there and do the job, I think he has a right to be bothered about it esp since you are so new and have not built up any credibility at all as to your reliability and performance on the job. If you’d been there a year or two, then that would be different but you’ve only been there a month.
NTA.
I’d even say take a few days off in addition. You need to get your health and mental state organised before even contemplating going back to work. You have to look out for yourself and take care of yourself first.
Your boss is an ass, indeed.
Dunno much about the company and all that and precious employees can have an impact. Tricky problem here. No your not the asshole. Manager isn’t really an asshole either from his perspective just hired a new employee who is calling out. Sure everyone gets benefit of doubt but managers with new hires get worried and it looks bad on the paperwork calling out so many times so shortly.. if you end up calling out this many times every month they will begin to start looking for reasons to fire you. Tbh reassure boss this isn’t normal and your not doing it on purpose and this isn’t normal just having a bad reaction to medicine and purely medical and should be back to normal very soon and shouldn’t be a problem in the future. From their perspective they are thinking they just hired someone who isn’t going to be dependable and they are about to have to fire for absentism etc.
One thing that we did learn from COVID finally was it’s ok to not come to work sick because it doesn’t actually help anyone in the end.
Are you still in a probation period? Because if you are struggling this much, this early, I can see why the manager would be getting frustrated. And if it was me, I wouldn’t extend an employee who struggles this much.
NTA. But perhaps you need to consider if this job is really for you.
NTA – Prednisone is absolutely terrible for anxiety. It destroyed my sleep schedule cause of all the anxiety I had. Talk to your doctor about getting some hydroxyzine if you can. Look after yourself!
Your in your probationary position. Calling out sounds like it may end in termination. Are you an asshole for being sick? No. But the boss isn’t either because you have called out multiple times in 4 weeks.
If you’re sick, you’re sick. But you have to see it from their point of view. A brand new employee that has barely been there a month and you have at least 2 callouts.
Not sure where you are, but if you’re in the US, you may wanna get FMLA.
NTA
FMLA won’t cover OP.
You have to be at a place for a year to be FMLA eligible.
This is a AITA question, take care of yourself, jobs come and go, they replace people fast, if you cannot handle the job right now that would just be a fact, take a step back from working if possible and get yourself better
