AITA for accidentally leaving my dads food out of microwave and his cats keep getting getting into it

I 21 male, keep forgetting to put my dad’s food back in the microwave. I’ve been living with my father for the past year and cats always get into it when it’s left out. Last night, my dad left for work and put his food in the microwave so he could eat it when he got home. I’m a night owl, so I’m usually awake at night to use the microwave, but I’m really only focused on my own food not putting something back. Since it’s dark, it’s easy for me to forget his food is still in there. The microwave is in the pantry under cabinets on the right when you walk in and straight ahead is where I would put his food so if your not paying attention to it you won’t see it. If there was anywhere else to put I would but the kitchen table has trash and dishes on it which doesn’t make sense to me why the cats would go for the microwave and not food on the table or stove. The microwave itself is really old probably around 40 years old because it used to belong to my late grandma. It looks old‑fashioned and takes forever to heat anything. If ramen says 3 1/2 minutes, this microwave needs 5 or more, so I’m constantly checking on my food to see if it’s done. My dad has four cats, and they sometimes get into the trash. In the mornings, I’ll come downstairs and see the trash can laid horizontal on the ground. I tell my dad all the time that the microwave isn’t a place to store food and he says “I can’t stand when you guys say that” because my sister also tells him to not leave food in the microwave. There’s a lot of restrictions for this Reddit thread so hopefully they don’t take mine down

  1. YTA you’ve been living there for a year, and can’t be bothered to help clean up a bit so the place is more livable for everyone?

  2. YTA. All the fluff you added is irrelevant: you take out the food, put yours in and then are so self absorbed that even after repeated issues, you forget to put it back in. Be more considerate and think of a way to remind yourself. Either flip on the light, clean up the kitchen, or some other way.

  3. YTA. You know the issue. Don’t take it out unless you can remember to put it back. If you are forgetful, put it next to the thing you will do next, I.e. the cutlery drawer.

  4. To confirm, your dad puts his food in the microwave, and you take it and leave it out?

If it’s literally you don’t put his food back where you found it, then YTA. It’s not that hard to put it back. The tidbits about its dark and I’m thinking about my food are just excuses. If you really can’t remember, then stop using the microwave after your dad leaves for work, and eat snacks and foods that don’t need the microwave.

If there’s something else happening, please clarify.

  5. Don’t you people have a refrigerator? Maybe leave it in there if it is left in the microwave. Use your head

  6. I’m sorry, but is he leaving food that isn’t room-temp stable (like leftovers that are supposed to be refrigerated) in the microwave all day while he’s at work?

If so ESH, I guess put things back how you found them, but also this is a food poisoning disaster waiting to happen and he shouldn’t be doing this at all. It’s massively unsafe and you can point him to USDA, CDC, etc resources about food safe temps and storage.

  7. Yes YTA. You take out his food, warm up your food, put back his food. Three simple steps.

The fact that you haven’t figured this out in the 365 days that you’ve been living there makes me question you.

And for goodness’ sakes, you live in that house too. Pick up the trash can if you see it has fallen down.

  8. So you’re living at your dad’s place and he’s done something the same way for 40years. And because you can’t remember to put it back after you disturb it he needs to change? Just don’t use the microwave if you can’t remember to put his food back. Sure it’s kinda weird and annoying that he uses the microwave like that, but there’s no reason he can’t. You need to develop a system to put his stuff back or just don’t use it while he’s at work. Put one in your room if you have to. Get a little air fryer for the kitchen and use that instead. Seriously.

    YTA

    1. A small microwave costs next to nothing these days. OP should definitely get one for his room if they can’t bother to leave the existing one as they find it.

  9. YTA. You moved his stuff and didn’t put it back where you found it. And you’re questioning if you’re the problem? Yeah, you are.

  10. Yes, YTA.
    1) put things back where you got them
    2) Man up and clean that damn kitchen
    3) stop smoking up so much. It’s making you lazy and (obviously) forgetful.
    4) if you’re not a cannibis consumer then you’re just plain lazy & selfish and you should be doing more to contribute to your home.
