AITA for calling out a line-cutter at Costco

I was at Costco and had just finished checking out when I realized I’d picked up the wrong item. I headed over to the supervisors’ desk and waited behind a gentleman who was already there. A couples minute later, a woman nudged in front of my cart, giving me an unapologetic wave. ‘I’ll be quick, I just have a question,’ she said.

I didn’t hold back. ‘I don’t give a shit. Wait in line,’ I told her. She looked at me like I was an alien and told me I was being incredibly rude. I followed up with: ‘Fine, pretty fucking please then. I also have a question, what makes yours more important than mine?’

When I went home and told my wife, she said I overreacted and in retrospect, I shouldn’t have cursed but I don’t regret calling her out.

  1. ESH. Yes, she was incredibly rude cutting but…your wife is right. You way overreacted.

Swearing at a total stranger does nothing to support your case. You could have easily said, “The end of the line is back there,” instead.

    1. She knew where the end of the line was and she knew she was cutting, based on her “just a minute” comment. NTA.

      1. Undoubtedly, and calling her out directly with where the end of the line is brings scrutiny to her actions. Suddenly everyone is looking, not just OP.

In any case, I hope she was embarrassed.

    2. This. Swearing at a stranger was absolutely uncalled for.

Handle your interactions with others with emotional control.

  2. Well you could have done it without swearing but NTA, people do this because other people let it slide. I don’t let that crap slide either. We are taught to wait our turn at a really young age, somewhere along the line people get the idea that their time is more valuable than everyone else’s but it is not and they should be called out for being rude.

  3. The only comment I have is that I’m sorry I was not there to witness it. I would’ve belly laughed and supported you.

  4. NTA. I’m six months pregnant and have a three year old in tow 99% of the time, and with this pregnancy I have completely lost all of the patience I once had for line cutters. I very loudly say “EXCUSE ME” anytime I see someone cutting any line. People these days are out of control. Waiting your turn is a virtue.

  5. NTA because she knew exactly what she was doing and is likely used to getting away with that sort of thing. People like that need to be called out.

  6. NTA. Nothing pisses me off faster than someone cutting in line.

We learn about line etiquette in kindergarten people.

  7. NTA She did not ask, she tried to take and got checked. She should be glad she got you and not my wife, the teacher.

  8. Last time I called someone out for cutting he told me he would rape me in the parking lot, so. Good times.

  9. At some point in everyone’s life they will come into contact with a queue jumper. I’m in the call them out camp.

  10. People in the comments need to stop clutching their pearls because of the swearing and cursing.

Respect should be earned, and you don’t need to respect someone who cuts a line.

    NTA
