AITA for defending a new cosplayer from my friends mocking

Am i the asshole for telling my friends to stop being rude to a cosplayer as they were clearly new
So my friends were mocking this one cosplayer for being new and not looking like the character (Harvey harvington) normally he’s white with light purple curly hair but this cosplayer was black (no judgement) a not styled wig and was female they were making jokes about them being like Michael Jackson changing races and the wig being unstyled and I mentioned that they were going too far as they were essentially mocking this new cosplayer one friend I’ve known for 2 years let’s call them J we’ll J started to just ignore me for the rest of the class and my other friend let’s call them B didn’t say anything not knowing what to say so am I the Ahole for not siding with my friends

  1. NTA your friends absolutely are, and racist too. It’s mean to make fun of new cosplayers and what race or gender you happen to be shouldn’t bar you from cosplaying who you want to. It’s meant to be fun, creative, and an expression of your attachment to that character or creative art. Your friends sound like the kind of people that make fandoms worse.

  2. NTA.

Your friends are being both racist and also vaguely classist. Not everyone is able to afford high quality cosplay wigs and other parts of the wardrobes. The Michael Jackson comment is rude towards people who have vitiligo, and completely uncalled for to make about a black woman cosplaying a lighter skinned character.

It’s nice that you called it out. Cosplay is supposed to be fun and open to all, without judgment.

  3. NTA and Michael Jackson did not “change races” – he had a medical condition called vitiligo. The ignorance of these children.

  4. Definitely definitely NTA. I mean, imagine it this way: the new cosplayer swapped races the opposite direction and your friends had a problem with THAT. That is an entirely different situation and seems to be what they’re hinting at (ie, they’re basically racists.) Quit hanging around with those losers and hang out with the new person.

  5. NTA. I’d drop those friends from your life, tbh. Because if they’re like that about a cosplayer, and yes we can cosplay across race and gender, they’re worse in many regards that they haven’t shown you.

  6. NTA. You did the right thing.

Your friends were mocking someone who was clearly new to cosplaying, and some of the comments crossed into mean and unnecessary territory. Calling that out isn’t being disloyal, it’s having basic empathy. Everyone starts somewhere, and cosplay is supposed to be fun, not a gatekeeping contest.

J ignoring you is immature, and B staying quiet is just conflict avoidance. Neither of those mean you were wrong. Not siding with your friends when they’re being rude doesn’t make you an asshole, it makes you decent.
