AITA For moving my phone away from a store employee

This happens to me a few times a month but I’ll go to a store and I’ll ask about a product or order and they’ll ask me a question about the order and I’ll take my phone out and they will try and take my phone from me or just to scroll on the screen without my permission. They could ask me to look for something or scroll down but they instead just try to use my phone.

I hate this bc if they drop it they definitely won’t pay for it and also I still mask during to problems with my immune system and I don’t want their dirty hands on my phone.

Today a customer service person at Target refused to help me because he reached over to touch my phone and I pulled it away and he got so angry.

AITA for moving my phone away from him?

  1. NTA, at all.  I hate when people touch or try to take my phone without asking.

The Target worker was way out of line for getting angry and refusing to help after that. He was in the wrong.

  2. NTA. If you offer them your phone, that’s one thing. But when they just reach for it without asking, it’s not ok. I don’t care if someone wants to show me something on my phone, so it’s not an issue for me.

  3. That’s crazy nta…I’ve only ever asked if the customer minds if I show them where the barcode is on their app or whatever but never just reached for it.

  4. NTA. No one touches my phone but me. Certainly not some random cashier or clerk. All it takes is for them to drop it or otherwise damage it, never mind the security issues.

  5. NTA I work retail and a lot of times when a customer is on their phone looking at something or trying to find details or load their card etc I asked PERMISSION to touch their phone. It’s common courtesy. And if they say no I try to guide them by hovering my finger over it without making contact.

  6. NTA. Most of the time they are already carrying handhelds or have access to something to look things up. They don’t need your phone if you can give them a SKU.

  7. If this happens consistently, I would have to wonder if you are dillydallying around and they reach to take it as you seem befuddled or you can’t figure it out.

  8. I am not questioning that this happens to you, but it never happens to me. I don’t think I’ve ever had an employee of any business reach for my phone.

I am curious as to what the difference is – age? gender? regional? by store? It’s not the masking, because – like you – I’m still consistently masking when out in public. It just boggles my mind that anyone would think it’s appropriate to try to grab someone else’s personal property.

Absolutely NTA. Report that guy from Target to management for a) trying to grab your phone without you offering it to him, and b) refusing to serve you.

    1. I’m calling BS because I worked at Target and that guy would be written up or fired for refusing to serve someone over something so trivial and he likely knows it. So either he really hates his job and wants to be fired (which IS possible but in this job market??) or this isn’t real/OP is exaggerating his reaction. I usually don’t leap to that conclusion on this sub but sheesh.

  9. NTA. I work in retail and we’re specifically told not to take a customer’s phone (to scan their member card). If I do need to, for whatever reason, I ask first.

  10. If a customer service person asks to have my phone for expediency, I will say yes. If they try to grab my phone with no warning, I will hiss at them (jk). For many of us, our lives are on our phones. When someone just grabs for it, it really feels violating. I try to make sure I’m always prepared in advance if I need to use my phone for a store purchase. NTA
