AITA for only doing my part for our research paper as ex-group leader

Hi! So, I, (F20), am currently in college and have been working on a research paper with my chosen group members back in our 3nd year-1st semester. Originally, the entire paper’s innovation was of my idea and as it was my idea, I was forced to be the group leader. Now, I have been trying my best to pull the group through that period of time till now at our 2nd semester.
Not only have they replaced me as leader, they chose the one freeloading within the group, and has butchered my work in the presentations and deleted the original contents of the Chapter 1 of the research file for ‘convenience’ sake.

Now, our new leader (F,something) has been crashing out because nobody was helping her redo the file that was perfectly fine till she decided to redo it herself. The others have hit the hay, I’m still awake, yet I feel as though I have 0 obligation to help her self-made problem.

So, AITA for letting her be since I already finished mine, grudge may or may not be included?

  1. NTA.

It sounds wonderful but unlikely that you can hand in your own (superior) versions of the presentation and research file. Often group project = group grade.

You might want to double-check with your professor about thi, and get advice.

  2. NTA. Plain and simple, academic labor should be fair for all students involved. If someone messed it up, they should fix it.

  3. Everyone in the group did you wrong and you have zero culpability in this. Why do find this hard to believe?

  4. NTA

Don’t fix things after someone else hacked up your work.  Hopefully, you have a copy of your work before the changes.  Contact the professor, explain the situation, and ask to turn in your version of the work.

  5. NTA. You did your part and it seems they disrespected both your work and your leadership. Now, they can deal with the consequences of their decisions.

  6. NTA but reach out to your prof. Some will grade individuals separately, some will not. Some will give everyone the same project grade but, based on team member repeats of the contribution of everyone in the group, give different participation grades. The sooner you reach out to your prof, the sooner you’ll be able to make an appropriately informed decision about how to proceed from here.

  7. Geez what kind of group paper extends over 2 semesters!? I don’t have enough info to decide who’s the AH here. Maybe you indeed were a terrible leader and needed replacing since this group clearly is a hot mess. But overall don’t sacrifice your grade to prove a petty point. Just resend your finished version and say let’s go back to this so we have a complete project to submit

  8. NTA! Group work sucks. There is always at least one person who messes it up for everyone else. Hopefully your Prof has some empathy. I would email the prof and the TA, and explain the situation as neutrally as possible. Nobody likes a whiner. Be professional about it.

If they won’t accommodate the reality of group work’s suckitude, either accept your grade will suffer or do the work again and be exceptionally loud about how much that one person messed up.

    Good luck!

  9. NTA. You should let your professors know the situation. This is really the disadvantage of “group” assignments: only one is actually doing it most of the time. I didn’t suffer through group thesis in college. Pass or fail, it was really up to me.

  10. NTA. I had a similar situation. So I put together what I thought it should have been and then sent it to the professor with a note as to why it is different from the group submission. Tell him you tried to steer it but they just took everything over. And make sure to point out the errors on the final product.
