My little sister Cadence is expecting a boy next month. Our whole family has been over the moon happy.
Cadence and her husband live 1.5 hours away, so we don’t see each other as much as we used to. Back when we lived in the same town.
Cadence, our family, her in laws, and some of her friends all got together for a brunch 3 weekends ago. I had a few too many mimosas, and I guess I was more “blunt” than I realized.
Either that, or my sister is hormonal and taking things to heart.
We asked her what the baby name is going to be and she told us “August”
Our grandma asked if it was a girls name, since the only other month names (April, May, June) are all for girls. Which I thought was ruder than how I reacted.
I just asked her “what?” Again because I never knew that was a name. So I wanted to make sure I heard it right. But I just said “oh ok, nice” but maybe my face didnt seem too confident in it.
This weekend, we got together again, just the two of us and I asked if the both of them have decided 100% on the name.
She said “yes, I already told you last month. Why are you asking again”
And seemed to be offended by that. I kept my mouth shut and just went on about our day.
Was I the asshole for this? I mean I genuinely don’t like or understand the name, and don’t like the whole “new wave” of baby names where it sounds like naming a pet. But I’d never tell her that. I just can’t pretend to LOVE something I don’t.
August is not a new wave of things. It’s a great name.
August being a “new wave” name, really ?
YTA. It isn’t a new name and there isn’t anything wrong with it.
August is uncommon but it is a normal classic name though?
Like here’s a [whole list of people with the name](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/August_(name))
YTA. August is a real name, for example, playwright August Wilson. If you don’t like it, keep it to yourself.
FYI: August is a very traditional boy’s name, often shortened to Gus. (There’s a reason parents should wait to reveal a name.)
YTA. Asking twice like you were going to get an answer you liked better is why you’re the asshole. It’s not your baby and August is a normal name. If you were actually confused you could just google it.
August (the month) is literally named after one of the most famous men in all of history, Augustus Caesar.
Come on. YTA.
YTA
It’s not your sister’s fault you didn’t know it was a name, and you were rude about it. Not sure what you expected here.
[August](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/August_(name)) and [Augustus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augustus_(given_name)) both have centuries-long histories as given names…but I guess you just couldn’t be bothered to look into that.
Who cares if you don’t like it? You don’t get a vote – or a veto – on anyone else’s choice of name.
Absolutely YTA.
YTA. August is not offensive and doesn’t mean something wildly different in another language. You don’t need to “understand” anything about it. It’s not your kid.
YTA especially because the month is literally a man’s name. Like that’s its origin. A man’s name.
And cool. You don’t like unique baby names. Good thing it’s not your baby lol if you had a reason beyond “choose a name from the top 100 baby names” then it’d be different. Something valid like “please don’t name your baby BoneCrusher, it will hard for them to get a job” ya’ know?
August is a very classic name and very popular last century. It’s not named for the month, it’s named for the man who the month was named for. Maybe you should look up Augustus, he was a pretty important person in world history
YTA August the month is literally named after Augustus Octavian (yk the first roman emperor) 💀💀 tf u mean a new name. That shits as old as rome.
Calling your sister hormonal and downplaying ur bad attitude while being confidently incorrect? Yeah im not surprised shes annoyed.
– also yes technically Augustus was a title not a name but it has been used as a name for a long time. Like centuries minimum
