I (27M) was at the gym after work yesterday. As usual, it was full with the after-work crowd so I’m going through my workout, waiting on the occasional machine or bench to open up. I get to end of my workout and I have one exercise left on a machine.
When I approach it, I see 2 guys are working in together. As one guy finishes his set, I asked them how many sets they have left. The guy answers "2", I was like "Ok, I’ll be over here" and move about 10ft away to be out of the way of other gym patrons, but clear that I was there waiting. I end up waiting almost 10 minutes until I see the first guy finish up and walk away, then the second guy starts doing what should be his last set. He does a couple of reps, and 2 of his buddies walk up: one being taller and the other on the shorter side. I see them talk for a moment, they all glance at me for a moment, then the guy still working out starts to add some more weight and do some more sets. As he gets up, his shorter buddy starts to use the machine.
This was when I was annoyed; they saw me waiting there for the machine. Eye contact was made and my presence acknowledged. I walk up and say, "Hey guy, I’ve been waiting on the machine for a while now." The shorter guy says, "My friend and I are swapping machines." I quickly said, "no, you aren’t. I haven’t seen you around here at all the whole time I’ve been waiting here. You can’t just ‘swap’."
He then gets up and says "Fine you can have it." He and his friends slowly walk away, glancing back at me and I can only assume talking foul about me, but I couldn’t hear them. Was what I did appropriate or too aggressive?
NTA. No reservations on gym equipment in public gyms.
NTA but they were.
People just don’t understand gym etiquette. You did the right thing by standing up for yourself. NTA

NTA. You handled it perfectly. Let them talk.
NTA. You didn’t swear or get angry. Totally reasonable. Of course that may not stop them calling you the grumpy bossy guy but honestly who cares.
NTA.
These guys have no gym protocol. They don’t get to cut the line because their buddy was on the machine before them. That’s ridiculous. I would’ve said something too. Freaking entitled muscleheads.
These guys weren’t even built >.< they were like high school or early college age.
NTA they def were rude as fck
NTA. You handled it well without getting aggressive but being assertive.
They need to Google Gym Etiquette. NTA
NTA. That’s high school level entitled AH jock shit.
NTA. Sounds like you handled things perfectly.
