AITA for complaining about my annoying neighbors

I live in student housing and since the beginning of the semester I’ve been dealing with constant noise from some neighbors both during the day and at night

The noise was so loud that I could clearly hear everything they were saying and it seriously affected my ability to study

At first I only complained about the loud noise during the day I didn’t mention any names only room numbers and I simply asked for quiet

After that the manager warned them and the noise stopped for about two days

Then the problem came back again this time with loud singing after midnight even though it was exam period

I recorded a video showing where the noise was coming from and made another complaint

After I shared my problem in a private housing group I received a reply from a girl who seems to be from the same rooms I complained about

Her message was full of insults and included a direct threat

She accused me of being mentally ill said I was interfering in things that don’t concern me and claimed that I had no right to complain

In the end I went back to the manager who promised to punish them

But afterward I started feeling a lot of guilt as if I had exaggerated even though the noise was real and repeated and even though I had received a threat

What made the guilt worse is that the punishment was relatively serious a written warning and possibly changing their rooms while all I really wanted was just a verbal warning and some peace and quiet

So honestly my question is

Am I wrong for complaining

Especially since the consequences for them were harsh even though that was never my intention

you asked for basic quite and you only escalated after it kept happening and got worse, singing after midnight during exams is exactly what complaints are for imo. the threat and insults just confirm you werent dealing with reasonable people

Respectable people keep the noise down after about 9 or 10 pm and before 7 or 8 am. That’s common courtesy. If someone refuses to do that I’d take action. However, I would have talked to the people myself first. Just a “hey guys, can you keep it down late at night. Thank you.” After that, all bets are off.

  3. Stop engaging them. Contact your landlord, and potentially law enforcement if they are breaking noise ordinances
