AITA weaponizing a cancer patient to shame my coworkers?

Ok, so I work as a pseudo manager at a large general store, pseudo because im in the process of it which basically means i have a large chunk of the responsibilities of a manager but i dont get paid like one and I’m only "in charge" when certain people arent around. Also, incase its important, we all work night shift when the store is closed and we dont have any customers. We close after 12 to stock the shelves.

Anyways, one of our janitors is an elderly man (let’s call him monty) in his late 60s, hes old, he complains a lot but he’s a pretty nice guy, unfortunately though, he was recently diagnosed with cancer and has started chemotherapy. This is something everyone knows because one he told everyone and two the man already looked like a skeleton before, its even worse now.

Now Monty still insists on coming to work despite his insurance and the fact that hes eligible for work leave. Idk why, thats just his choice. Obviously however he’s a bit slower than he use to be.

One of montys biggest pet peeves is the fact that he has to sometimes reclean the bathrooms, the break room and countertops sometimes more than 6 to 8 times a night because our fellow associates will just leave massive messes after break. They dont do this because they hate Monty or anything, they’ll do this regardless of whos on shift.

Ive tried reporting it to actual managers, since i dont offically have any power or authority, but its always the same old "well i didnt see it and i dont know who truly did it so i can talk to them but thats about it."

When im able to, i will reclean some of the areas for monty, but ive got my own stuff to do, a lot of it is time sensitive and i cant keep delaying things to help poor old monty.

Recently however I’ve started doing this thing where when i see people leave a mess ill say, as snarky as i can, "oh that cancer guys gonna love cleaning this," and then go about my day. This has gotten a lot of people to clean up at least SOME of their messes.

This has actually caused a few of my coworkers to get pissed at me however for trying to "guilt them into doing montys job for him," to which idk, yea he’s a janitor but just because you have a janitor at your work doesnt mean you need to act like an unsupervised toddler and leave messes everywhere. Originally I didnt think I was the asshole, however quite a few of my coworkers have started saying i am and some have even tried to report me to management.

Some have even gone as far as to say, that Im weaponizing a cancer patient to make people feel bad, and when you put it like that I do feel a bit like an asshole, but idk monty hasn’t said anything and he knows what I’ve been saying, but he could just be being nice, but enough people are starting to call me an asshole and im starting to feel like one.

So reddit, AITA?

    1. Yea, he knows, he doesnt care. In his words, “maybe it’ll get them to stop pissing on the bathroom floor.”
