Long story short, I realize this is a petty bet. I bet my friend that Kanye West would not get another number one single on the Hot 100 in 2026. I still have the message with the original terms, so people can decide based on what was actually written.
About a week later, he tried to change the bet into Kanye West just having to place anywhere on the Hot 100 from 1 to 100, which obviously increases his chances of winning. When I told him the bet was specifically about a number one single, he started telling my coworkers that I was changing the terms and trying to cheat him, even though I was only sticking to what we originally agreed to.
He claims the way the message is written can be read as any chart placement, and that I am cheating by insisting it means number one. I told him if he wants to back out, then back out, but do not try to convince everyone I am a cheater for enforcing the original bet.
*I called him a weasel for trying to make it seem as if I had cheated, just to save face while backing out of the bet.*

NTA – I don’t know what the document says, but even if it is vague, it’s still weird for him to complain about it to your coworkers.
I don’t even know bro, NTA I guess could’ve made terms a top 50 or better? getting a top 1 single is hard but even then should’ve made different arrangements before the bet.
Honestly? This whole thing is childish. Tell everyone the truth and call off the bet and maybe don’t interact with him as much? Someone who will lie about you for something so petty isn’t someone I would be friends with, and trying to enforce a bet with someone like that will be way more trouble than it’s worth
How is the “whole thing” childish if you acknowledge that the other guy is being a total AH about it…?
The other guy is being an AH but what I meant is this is really petty and OP can’t force this guy to keep to the bet anyway so he should just move on
I think OP is kinda forced to advocate for himself if this is happening at work though. He’s def not getting that money but his necessary reputational defense just happens to also explicitly reveal the other guy to be a total [insert insult here].
ESH. what are you guys, teenagers?
what I’m thinking, this just sound out of ordinary ngl
NTA obv.
The existing receipt has me confused over how a real person could possibly think it’s smart to talk mess about you here.
Info: who sent the text message defining the terms?
If it was him you are 100% in the right here. If you sent the text I think there is a little more room for understandable misinterpretation.
For example the bet doesn’t make sense at all because it say another number 1 single he hasn’t had a number one single yet in 2026 so he can’t have another one.
What was the reply back to accept the bet.
Also did you give him any odds for this bet as your interpretation would be a hugely lopsided bet. Polymarket has it at about 5-1
Who gives odds on a bet between friends?
ESH-you sent the text so it could be open to interpretation, you shouldn’t call people names.
NTA
As others have suggested, call off the bet. And never accept any kind of bet with this person again, it will always be a repeat performance. Also this person is not a friend, welching on a bet because there is a chance he won’t win isn’t friend behavior.
But if he has been whining to your coworkers, then turnabout is fair play, you can set the record straight and show them the messages, I bet his stock with your coworkers will go down very quickly…
