I own a small company and employ just over 300 people.
I employ men, women, students, international students, semi retired people and kids who want an after-school job.
I will not, however employ anyone who includes pronouns on their application. I have found in the past that people who use pronouns in their applications and employment are a HR nightmare. Employees are walking on eggshells to avoid perhaps unintentionally offending someone. Pronoun people are forever clogging up the HR department with petty Complaints and unreasonable requests. Something, as a small business, we don’t have the time or finances to deal with.
So, AITA for not considering these people for employment?
YTA – and you might want to research discrimination law.
YTA and it takes no effort to use pronouns properly. You’re making a big assumption about how much “clogging up” this would be.
YTA for this obvious bait imo
YTA – what a dumb hill to die on and for your crappy prejudice. Also thats discrimination.
Obviously YTA
LOL everybody getting mad over some obvious bait
YTA – you’re so concerned that other people will be worried about offending them that you’re denying them employment? Be honest with yourself here, you’re just out of your depth and being reactionary instead of curious
YTA. Everyone has pronouns. Yours and mine are just the defaults so we don’t feel the need to share them. I clarify the pronunciation of my name in my signature because not only do people constantly pronounce it incorrectly even after I tell them how to say it, but my mother and I both have been “corrected” numerous times throughout my life on how it should be pronounced. Would you refuse to hire me if I told you the correct way to pronounce my name?
What you’re saying when you refuse to acknowledge preferred pronouns is that you don’t respect your employees. Thank you for saying it out loud here. It would actually be really helpful if you would be honest about that on your job postings(note: I am not a lawyer or HR professional and this is not to be construed as legal advice. YMMV)
Please educate yourself about what pronouns are. You have used several in this post alone.
Also yes you absolutely are TA and a bigot.
YTA. That is a really stupid and petty criteria to use to decide who not to hire.
YTA. You’re discriminating against people. Pronouns are part of the conversation now. You’re actions and the way you speak about people really shows you’re not a good person.
If a “type of person” is an HR nightmare for your business, then your business is a hostile work environment.
You aren’t eliminating problem people, you are eliminating people who advocate for themselves.
YTA
On Reddit? Really? Everybody is gonna say YTA. I think you should hire the best candidate. If you find people with certain things on their resume that you don’t like, don’t interview them. Find a more suitable candidate.
YTA. Many serious professional applicants have pronouns in their bio by default for the simple reality that in sending out a large number of resumes, many will be screened by models trained on HR “principles” and past data, much of which statistically favor inclusive language. Plus, it’s illegal discrimination.
