AITA for feeling bitter about not being in public service

I am unfortunately part of the many unemployed graduates (well, not employed by government is what I mean). But I’m also a curious person who likes to understand things.

I graduated a long time ago and soon realized getting a job in the public service was not going to happen as soon as I thought it would. (I am in a profession in my country, where the pay is only satisfactory if you are employed by the government.) So I decided to start my own thing, which has actually gotten me a good job. I earn about 20,000 a month, plus more from side hustles. My expenses are relatively small, under 12,000, so on paper I’m doing okay.

But I’ve been feeling rather sad about my status as an “unemployed graduate.” Is this normal?

Whenever I hear that my friends are getting employed, I feel some type of way… almost like I don’t want them to have that. It hurts me to even admit that. I want to be grateful and happy for them and for what I’ve achieved so far, but I am always comparing myself to them.

In the past I used to compare my income to civil servants. Now that I make nearly the same, I have new comparisons. Recently the salary increments for civil servants frustrated me. Then I also learned about the perks like lump sums and continuous monthly payouts for life. All this makes me feel bad.

Has anyone faced this and overcome it? I feel like this mindset is robbing me of my peace.

  1. NTA – wanting what someone else has is human. Just a note: Working in the government is not a universally sought after thing. Many, MANY people would LOVE to be their own boss and be working for themselves.

      1. Um, ok. I don’t think saying OP is NTA automatically makes the others assholes, so not sure why NAH is needed, but whatever.

        1. Um it actually does – maybe read up on the way this sub operates before getting an attitude

NTA – op not asshole but other parties involved are
YTA – op is the asshole but others aren’t
          ESH – everyone sucks
          NAH – no assholes

  2. INFO – what’s the actual conflict here? are you just asking us if you’re an asshole for not being happy about your job / lack thereof when compared to your friends? if you haven’t offloaded your bitterness on your friends and acted negatively towards them then there is no conflict and
    I think you’re in the wrong subreddit….

Don’t be so hard on yourself. You are *self-employed*, not *unemployed.* You are engaged with some activity that’s making you money comparable to employment that you would be happy with. You have entrepreneurial skills that a civil servant does not; be proud of yourself.

I’m not sure where you live, but you can invest in your own superannuation/pension funds to get payments for life. Put your money to work, and focus on building your nest egg.

  4. I get it, comparison sneaks up on everyone. But honestly, you built your own success while others wait for a system to hand it to them. That’s worth more than any job title
