AITA for making my best friend think we were hooking up by accident?

So me (19M) and my best friend (19F) have a very shared interest for all things pirate, whether it be merch for stuff like Pirates of the Caribbean or history we love it.

However we both also get shipped alot with eachother by our other friends who often say that we should hook up as a joke, especially one of our childhood friends (20M) who always jokes about wanting a run down on how it would happen. So, leaning into that joke and our pirate obsession I had a funny harmless wordplay prank I would pull on my 19th birthday party. I asked her if she wanted to ‘hook up’ trying to talk about a pirate themed party.

However, I had recently noticed a strange turn in her behaviour, especially around me. She was getting a lot more touchy and pratically begging to hang out every time I was free. I didn’t think much of it as she had just gotten rejected.

So when I heard a knock on my door 30 minutes after I sent the text, I certainly wasnt expecting her to be wearing full revealing clothes and immeadiatly to pounce on me and start kissing me aggressively. Things were made even more awkward as I was dressed up in a full pirate costume with a hook and everything.

Remembering our look of horror as we both realised what happened and as I desperately tried to explain the joke still haunts me.

We still hooked up after the party and our friend got his explanation.

And then the next day none of my friends were talking to me apart from the boy who rejected her who tells me that she has really liked me for a while and that everyone thought I was being serious and was happy for her to come.

But I think she is also in the wrong for telling people that I asked her to hook up. If I was being serious because this was a major invasion of my privacy and I wanted to confront her about it but she has blocked me on everything, all over wordplay.

  1. if you guys still hooked up regardless, i don’t really see an issue? definitely communicate better next time. also, if she “really likes you” why is she speed running to 3rd base? even if y’all are friends, there is still a level of romantic intimacy that needs to happen for a relationship to blossom- if that’s what you both/she wants in the end.

    NTA

  2. fuck it, ill bite.

You did ask her to hook up. you actually did hook up. more than once that night apparently.

then you, what, told her she was wrong for telling people you asked her to hook up, in such a way that she blocked you.

YTA, and if this is ai slop, the ai is an asshole too

  3. NTA – in my opinion at least

This is a tricky situation because both parties feelings are valid, BUT- she had no right to tell others that you two were going to ‘hook up’, she also should’ve written to confirm anything beforehand. IDK, like I said it’s a tricky situation and both have valid feelings on the situation.

    1. What’s to confirm when he asked to hook up and then actually hooked up with her? If I said I wanted to fight you and then actually fought you, there is no misunderstanding there.

      1. Could just be me, but if some one theoretically asked to hook up over text I’d message them about it before actually going to y’know hookup- but yes they did hook up in the end so idk

  4. YTA, you messed with her head, used her for sex and think you’re the victim. To do that to my worst enemy is as morally repugnant as it is beneath me and you did it to a friend you knew had feelings. You’ve also probably ruined pirates for her.
