Howdy, I’m currently serving in the United States Army, on rotation in Korea. I overheard my buddies talking about getting drunk, even though we’re not allowed to drink for another month due to phase one restrictions. They had a plan to drink in their room and not get caught (or so they thought).
Later on, I remembered they invited me, and I thought, ‘Why not have a beer or two? If they got it into the room, what’s the worst that can happen, right?’ So, I called my buddy and asked, ‘Hey, can I come over and chill for a little with a beer?’… and all hell broke loose.
He had me on speaker, and unknown to me at the time, our PSG (Platoon Sergeant, the guy in charge of us in civilian terms) was in his room. He’s a real by-the-book, straight-arrow type. He starts screaming, and the phone call gets cut off. My buddy ends up getting his room tossed, and our PSG finds the bottle and case of beer and chews him out for over an hour.
Then, he calls everyone back for a formation and throws the liquor and beer at the front, stating, ‘Since we want to do whatever we feel like, I’m going to make an example out of ( not giving names ). He says that not only will he be receiving an Article 15, but he will also be on restriction and have three mandatory check-ins a day.
Now, in my defense, why would he be on speaker? But now he blames me, saying I ruined his career and it’s my fault for ‘opening my mouth.’ I don’t think I did anything wrong, but let me know what you think. Sorry for the military terms, lol
NTA. You aren’t to blame for your buddy’s terrible opsec.
I’ve never understood people who put every phone call on speaker.
I REALLY don’t understand someone putting calls on speaker *while actively trying to keep something hidden.*
Your buddy has TERRIBLE OPSEC, and you did nothing wrong.
NTA – and USFK에 오신 것을 환영합니다
There’s a chance the Sergeant made OP’s buddy answer on speaker, it’s the sort of thing people in power do when someone dares to interrupt them by calling someone they’re speaking to.
If a PSG tried to make me do that, I’d just look at them and say, “no need – if it’s important, they’ll leave a message.”
That would be a REALLY interesting walk up the chain of command…”Am I to understand that enlisted members are not allowed to have privacy in their personal communications, even when off duty?”
You can also answer with “hey buddy you’re on speaker with our PSG present.”
ESH you wanted to break the rule too. It’s kind of unfair that it was only him who got punished.
Found pete kegseths origin story
He can’t blame you for ruining his career, since he’s the one who chose to bring it and stash it in his room. That was his gamble. He was bound to get found out one way or another.
PSG prob made him answer on speaker if he was answering in front of him?
You both should get an article 15 for being dumbasses.
If you’re gonna do hoodrat shit, at least be smart about it. Sheesh
NTA. Your friend’s stupid for having you on speaker phone without letting you know right away.
Na, not your fault at all. The first rule of putting a phone call on speaker, especially with your boss around, is to immediately announce that you’re on speaker and who is in the room with you. Bet he won’t make that mistake again.
NTA friend should’ve declined the call and texted not now or some shit UNLESS PSG told him to answer the phone, then how tf would you have known if he didn’t say “hey what’s up you’re on speaker”
At least friend can use the article 15 as ammo for a VA claim 🤷🏿♂️
Your friend needs to be more quick-witted.
>Hey, can I come over and chill for a little with a beer?
Hell no, you’re not bringing your beer into my barracks. You know we’re on restrictions.
Sounds like typical barracks shit. If you had pulled a blue falcon and ratted him out or something that would be a different story.
He can blame you all he wants, but before you even called, the sergeant was there, and had him answering his phone on speaker because he was acting squirrely. That shit is no coincidence, it’s just easier to blame you than admit that he was likely about to get caught anyway because someone else might have been closing in on his small party idea from big clues and years of experience.
Also their own NJPs from when they had their own parties.
