AITA? If you’re Familiar with Diablo 2 or D2R

So the game D2R has free for all looting system which I’ve been playing for years. There are certain levels of etiquette to my understanding if you’re getting rushed through a level or weird agreed upon terms. Now I will occasionally play with friends and they find it annoying that I’m just faster at picking loot up in the game, and also FULLY willing to just give them whatever it was if they wanted or needed it and my personal gear is unaffected. I generally don’t go out of my way to make trades with randoms so if they could use it it’s fine.

But they consider me an asshole for picking up the loot “too fast” and call me a loot goblin. Am I the asshole for…clicking faster?…and giving the loot to whoever needs it anyway? Am I supposed to stand there with my Tome in my hand and just look at the loot?

  1. omg the classic “i’ll give it to you if you need it” excuse lol. if you know they want it just let them grab it first, being the loot ninja isn’t cute even if you’re “faster.

  2. Yeah, its not that you’re faster. And the answer to your question is yes. They do want you to just look at it.

We have a loot goblin in our group. He says the same thing, “Just tell me if you want something, I’ll share”. But heres the catch: I never see what he grabs. He picks it up so fast, and then he gets to look at his leisure while we’re all guessing.

You need to chill out. You are being greedy and self centered. Just because a toy allows you to play a certain way, doesn’t mean its not rude.

  3. YTA with caveats

If you’re doing 90% of the damage and finding all the exits, and they’re pretty much just leeching, then sure, you get first dibs on the loot.  If you’re playing *with friends* and you’re still claiming first dibs on everything that drops because you click faster, even when everyone is contributing equally, then you are a loot goblin.

Why do you deserve to upgrade everything first?  You’re supposed to be playing as a team.  That means that even if something is an upgrade for you, you still pass it on to a friend if it’s a bigger upgrade for them.

If course, this all gets thrown out the window when you play with randoms, in which case it is whoever clicks fastest.

  4. YTA. People don’t want to have to ask and rely on your generosity for shareable loot. Honestly D2 should add a PoE type personal loot option. In that one everyone can see what was dropped but only one person can pick an item up for a small window, I think like 5 seconds. You should try to do something similar, give everyone a couple seconds if they want to grab something, then it’s fair game. Given that it isn’t a true personal loot system you’ll need to add yourself in there as well, but it should be something like every third or fourth item you snag and give the other guys a chance for them to have first dibs the other times

  5. You’re not faster, you’re greedier.  You should be letting the other players loot too. Yeah, YTA and I wouldn’t play with you.

  6. YTA

When you are quick to loot, you force your friends to rely on you. You might be the good guy every time, but it still feels like begging for a piece of gear. And if 2 people need/want the gear, YOU get to be the deciding factor. Or if you want the drop, YOU get to choose to give it away. It isn’t a fun way to play. But I suspect you know this and that is part of why you enjoy looting quickly.

  7. YTA

So you steal all the loot and only when you can’t use it do you go: oh btw anyone want this thing i don’t need.

Hoarding the good stuff for yourself first.

And let’s not talk about the money and other non gear things that drop

ETA: the proper way to do it as you are trying to look at it from a ‘how long should i wait’ pov is to let it all lie on the ground and then do pass / need / greed calls on shit that’s dropped.

You are focused on looting, your friends are focused on other things. A countdown is even more obnoxious.

  8. Yta.

If you take everything i wouldn’t want to play with you.

Change the context out of video games, its obnoxious behaviour.

If a ber dropped would you give it away to someone that needs it? Griffins? I think not.

Even if you did what you said its a very controlling and manipulative thing to do. And in a game about getting loot, you take that away then lord over your friends.

  9. YTA

If you’re rushing them, then there’s nothing of value in that difficulty for you anyway.

Go grind cows or Über Diablo if you need good loot.

  10. I say this with no negativity, but are you autistic by any chance?

Everything you write and comment here is strung together by robotic logic and measurable ways of doing one thing or another. But this is a social situation, not a computable path to an optimal result.

Yes you literally are supposed to just not click on the loot faster than your friends once in a while. No you can’t define “how fast” or “how often”. You’re gonna have to put your social antennae up and figure it out. No you can’t count out loud while you give them time. Just leave the loot and let it go. Put friendship and feelings above being right or capable.

I play soccer with my child. Do you think I should play at my full 100% capacity all the time, every time? Do you think I should explicitly tell him if I am letting him win? Who would be having fun, and what would we achieve? Apply this thought.

  11. Hmm I’m thinking mild yta, most drops are worthless but building up a storage of runes, gems, rejuvs, and socket gear is useful from early to late game. It would be annoying to have the “fastest clicker” be the only one getting those. If it’s equipment they’re mad about just make sure to offer any set/uniques (potentially rares too), before selling.
