AITA for having my boyfriend keep his cat in the basement?

My bf moved in with his two cats about a year ago now. The entire time they’ve been here, one of the cats has ruined multiple pieces of my furniture. He’s pulled a ton of fabric out of all four dining room chairs, out of three separate lounge chairs and tonight, he put a bite mark in the curtains in the living room.

I’ve asked my bf multiple times to do something about it. He says he’s tried everything: scratcher pads, spraying the furniture, etc., but nothing seems to work. It honestly seems like he’s just given up and it’s annoying to me. Tonight, I told him we need to start letting him roam around up here freely less and let him have access to the basement instead. I told him there’s also my bf’s old furniture down there that his cat *can* scratch.

He got upset and said no. He said that we can get new furniture. I explained that I don’t want to get new furniture nor do I want to spend money on that right now.

So am I being unreasonable asking him to keep his cat downstairs for now? I’m tired of my furniture getting ruined.

  1. ESH. You for wanting to isolate a very social animal. That’s just cruel.

Him for not playing with his cat. That’s why the cat is scratching. It’s bored.

Yeah cats scratch. Our cloth couch is covered 9 ways to Sunday because they love scratching it. And we have MULTIPLE scratchers. And a wall or shelves. And a catio. We still have to spray them every once in a while because they scratch in the rug or the chairs. Esp with zoomies. They will chill out in a couple of years, but until then. It’s their house. But we actually like animals and love our cats. If you didn’t, it’s your fault for moving in with him.
