AITA for scaring my roommate with a fake police raid after he broke my gaming setup?

AITA?
My roommate recently accidentally dropped my gaming PC and completely broke it. I was furious because it cost a lot of money and I had been saving up for months.

Today, while he was sleeping, I decided to prank him. I printed fake police summons, called friends to pretend to be "police," and when he woke up, the whole house was "under lockdown." He started panicking, yelling, and almost broke the door trying to escape.

I revealed the prank after 10 minutes and told him it was because he broke my PC. He was shocked and now says he’ll never trust me and plans to move out. I know this might have been extreme, but he really broke my equipment and didn’t apologize. AITA

  1. YTA – I appreciate and understand that he broke your gaming PC and you’re upset, that’s perfectly valid.

However, you also said “accidentally” which means you’re acknowledging that you know it wasn’t malicious or with intention.

This is a huge overreaction imo and incredibly unnecessary, I’m not surprised he wants to move out, could you not have just asked him to contribute towards the repairs or a replacement? That would have been a much better way of resolving this.

He broke your PC that’s frustrating, sure but faking a police raid is way over the line. You scared him badly enough that he tried to escape the house. That’s not a prank, it’s just cruel.
No wonder he doesn’t trust you now.

  3. ESH.

He should apologise and pay for what he broke. If he doesn’t, you can take him to small claims court.

That was not a prank you pulled. A prank ends with both people laughing. You didn’t want him to laugh, you wanted to scare him. And you did. Now you’re surprise pikachu face that he’s angry at being scared?

You guys both suck and need to grow up.

  4. ESH. Your roommate sucks because he broke your shit and didn’t offer to pay for it. (Or did he?) and yes, he can’t trust you either not to pull shit in what is also his home.

  5. YTA. Him dropping the PC was an accident, your response was intentional. You could’ve given him a chance to pay for repairs or checked renters insurance. Instead, you and your friends caused a disturbance for your neighbors and potentially committed crimes in the process.

His home was supposed to be his safe space. You and your friends violated that. Be thankful he’s only moving out instead of retaliating.

  6. YTA-to say that was immature and a ridiculous over reaction is a huge understatement. You yourself said it was an accident. So you’ve never had any accidents in your whole life? Wow.

  7. ESH, but you most of all. He needs to recover what you lost, but what you did was over the top ridiculous.
