AITA for asking how much was the mattress?

Let me give context. I’ve mentioned in the past (once in a while) that I need a new mattress since the one I had sags in the middle. I thought it was due to the wear and tear over the past years (5 yrs). My mom slept on it and made the same complaint I usually have but it was a very good bed. I mentioned to my mom that I’d trade her mattress for mine as a joke. Now with the holidays, she bought me a mattress which I was great full and overly excited. She helped me move the old mattress and put the new one, but when I sat on it, I didn’t like it. (Keep in mind that my face is very expressive and it shows) I smiled and looked at my old mattress with sadness. We move it to the living room and something made me want to try my mattress on the floor.
Turns out it’s the mattress box that has an issue and not my actual mattress bed. My mom noticed my behavior and mentioned she couldn’t return the new mattress. I almost cried (don’t judge) since I had to throw my old mattress that had nothing wrong with it. I now think I was the a-hole for asking her how much was the mattress so I could refund her.

My mom offered to go to her house and we did. She went to her room and I noticed she started removing her bedding and asked me to help her move the mattress (weird) I didn’t and that’s when she told me I could have her mattress and she’ll take the one she bought me. I told her no, that I’d just buy the box and call it a day. She insisted to the point we had an argument (nothing bad was said) and I firmly told her that it was fine. I’d take the mattress she bought me and she could keep hers. I could see that she wanted to cry which made me feel terrible and like an ungrateful daughter.

Now I’m back home, my old mattress is next to the dumper and I’m laying on the new mattress as my Christmas gift.

Am I the a-hole?

  1. I’m sure final/as-is mattress sales exist if you’re buying the floor model or something, I’ve just never heard of a company that didn’t offer a sleep trial or some other return policy. Maybe she bought a used mattress? Also, box springs and mattress foundations shouldn’t affect the sleep quality materially. If that’s the issue, purchasing the right box spring or foundation “mate” will likely resolve whatever problem that’s occurring.

    NAH, I think(?)

  2. If your old mattress had nothing wrong with it, can’t she have that one? Or can’t you keep it if the bed is the problem and not the mattress?
