AITA for speaking up on proper gym etiquette

Friend and I are at the gym together he uses slightly less weight than me we were at a machine and he uses 45 and a 10. I was using two 45s It was my last set someone next to us steals the 10s on our machine’s reserve rack. I got done with my set and said something like "Hey its proper to ask before stealing peoples weight" and he got extremly pissed off telling me to "suck his balls" and "eat shit" and "to do something about it" I said knowing he’s a big dude that goes to the gym a lot "Oh I didnt know it was your first time in the gym its proper gym etiquette to ask before stealing someones weight on their machine"

    1. Only answer to be honest lol went from 1 to 100 from me just saying “Hey we were using those”

      1. From the original post, you didn’t say “hey we were using those”, you said “hey it’s proper to ask before stealing people’s weight” which is kind of confrontational and a little aggressive imo. You literally were calling him out for stealing and not being proper, giving him no benefit of the doubt. How do you think he’d react?

  1. You didn’t have to say it in such a confrontational way (saying he STOLE your weights) I’m not a gym brother though so idk how you guys talk to each other normally. Why can’t you just say “excuse me, I was using those” or even better, just let it go.
    Edited to add: YTA

  2. NTA

But the proper terminology would be that they ask before the TAKE the weights people are using. I can’t steal something from you that isn’t yours.
