I really can’t stand it when I’m trying to get off an elevator and when it’s my stop, people start rushing in without letting me out.
I live in a multi floor apartment complex. Every time I go downstairs and try to get off the elevator, the person or people who are waiting just walk on in without letting me get out.
This morning I had enough. When I got to the first floor, once again people started rushing in and I just stood there in the door. I didn’t let anyone in until they moved so I could pass. Cue grumbling and cursing from said neighbors. I even got called rude and got a "Excuse you!" from a lady.
What do you guys think? Am I really an asshole?
NTA people get off then people load on.
NTA
Common courtesy is to let people out before you go in, doors, elevators, wherever. You allow yo to mae space for you to enter by allowing them to leave.
This. Also buses, subways, etc. Not only common courtesy, but common sense. Having fewer people in the elevator dramatically increases the chances of having space for the next would-be rider.
nta it pmo so much especially in public transport people think the world revolves around them or something, you let people out first and then go in its common sense
NTA. This is one of those etiquette of necessity concepts. The people getting on can’t possibly do so effectively until you get off. Their impatience is not your concern. I’ve stopped paying attention when the elevator door opens and I’m getting off. If we walk into one another, we walk into one another.
The flip side to this though is that I am always off to the side waiting for the elevator and make sure there is space and time for people to exit. If you rush on and still expect people to get out of the way for you to get off, you’re a hypocrite and the A-hole.
I would just yell “first off, then on!” as I plowed through the crowd.
NTA at all. In fact, the amount of YTA replies you’re getting is crazy to me.
In the UK, people automatically stand back and let other people get off lifts (elevators), trains, buses, etc before getting on. It’s common courtesy and *very* basic manners.
Make an official-looking sign and post it by the elevator: “Kindly allow residents to exit the elevator *before* you enter. Thank you for your courtesy.” 😉
NTA. elevator rules exist.
I have dealt with similar people on the train, rushing to get on, while I (on my bike) try to exit. I use my voice though… “You do realize that people have to get off the train, before you get on right?” This usually stops them in their tracks, but always with a “how dare you” look on their face!
I made a post about this once because it made me so angry. I started telling people, if you want to take my space in here, just let me out. The fact that they have to actually calculate that in their brain, is beyond me. Sometimes I say, let me out if you want in. NTA
People get out before people get in. Basic elevator etiquette. NTA.
Nta. You’re supposed to let people off first. That’s how you make room for other people to get on.
Exiters go first, that is the rule. It is a long standing unwritten rule and makes common sense since the exiters leaving makes space for the new riders.
