So this happened last night. Me (F21) and my best friend Jenny (F21) have been best friends for nearly 15 years. In college she got herself a turtle (Tito) keep in mind it’s been two years and I haven’t had an issue with it being left on my couch until last night. She likes to take him out of his cage to roam but is usually pretty good at keeping an eye on him.
Anyways to get to the part that I might be an asshole is when she was taking a nap on the couch (we live together) I had no idea that she had Tito out and about so when I went to go and watch a show or something, I felt something hard under me when I went to sit down. I immediately jumped up and told her I sat on her turtle. She pretty much immediately started yelling at me. And now she still won’t talk to me. I told her it was her fault for leaving him on the couch, but she says she didn’t mean to fall asleep without putting him away. Now he has a small crack on his shell I told her I don’t think it hurts him but I’m actually not sure. I don’t know how to fix the situation because i think it’s pretty much unfixable.
So am I the asshole for sitting on her turtle when I didn’t know he was on the couch? And should she still be mad at me when it was her fault for falling asleep?
NTA, but that turtle is in pain and needs vet care ASAP. They have tons of nerves in their shells!
I’m genuinely confused about why you posted here. You sat on a couch and you didn’t know the turtle was out. That’s an accident, not something you did wrong. And of course she’s upset because her pet got hurt, but that doesn’t automatically make you at fault, and the silent treatment is over the top. BUT – You’re 21 and you’ve been friends since you were like 6 according to you. Have you never had to handle conflict with this person before in the span of 15 years? Why would you even be questioning yourself?
Sometimes people are manipulated and need outside perspectives to hear the truth.
NTA. You didn’t know about the turtle, though in the future it would be a good idea to check before you sit.
Both of you blaming eachother will do no good. Volunteer to take the turtle to the vet and pay half of the fee. Then you see how things develop.
NTA. People are not typically looking out for turtles when they sit down on a couch. She sounds very irresponsible.
*Ugh,* this is one of those horrible accidents that both of you could’ve prevented with like, a tiny little bit more care and attention. She shouldn’t fall asleep with her turtle out of his cage, and since you know that a turtle does roam free in the apartment sometimes, you should look before you sit. Neither of you can change what you did, and neither of you meant any harm.
But stop finger-pointing at each other and take the turtle to the vet! It does not matter who’s at fault, it matters that the turtle gets checked out to make sure he’s okay. ESH for being negligent and focusing on blame instead of the actual issue – the injured turtle.
They have so many feelings in there shell omg. Poor thing.
I didn’t read your post and I was like yes
Then I did and I was like, it’s not really your fault and she’ll get over it
Why are you on here worrying about who did what instead of going to a vet. That turtle needs care immediately or it will die.
Please get Tito to the vet asap. Live in the solution moving forward
I don’t think you’re the asshole. I personally think you both suck in this situation 🤷🏻♀️ she made an irresponsible choice to have a sleep with the turtle out, she claimed it was an accident but as soon as she started feeling groggy she should have popped him away. It’s not your fault for not looking for the turtle first however after the apology the next step a decent human being would make is to offer to take the animal to the vet to be checked over for injuries. I understand that’s expensive and may be out of your price range to cover the whole cost (if medical treatment is required i mean) so that would be something you need to discuss prior to the vet trip however I do think you should have offered to cover the trip so Tito can be checked over.
NTA. It was an accident but the turtle now needs immediate veterinary care. You should offer to pay for it. Cracked shells are very painful and infection can set in quickly. Fortunately, it is not difficult for a vet to treat. Act quickly, though!
It was an accident, but get that turtle to the vet ASAP, or you’ll both be AHs.
