AITA for not letting my paper get photographed?

Basically, myself (20M) is a university student (learning film) and has a course called Indian Cinema. Since it’s a new course and I can’t risk my scholarship, I studied so hard for it – took notes, watched every single film and did every possible thing for good scores and emerged class topper. One of my friends didn’t get to write the exams due to her attendance shortage (she just didnt attend the classes) and her retest is coming this Feb. As soon as I got the answer script today, she just impulsively started photographing it, and I requested her not to. I know that it isn’t that big of a deal, but I felt very awkward when she did that cuz I put A LOT (four whole months) of effort into it and I found out references from films I’ve never watched and structured my answers so well, I just don’t want some random classmate taking it away with no efforts. She got very pissed and just murmured something and turned away, even though I was very polite. AITA here?

  1. You’re NTA. She wanted to cheat off you, you’re not required to participate in her cheating. If she wants to be angry at someone, she needs to blame herself for not putting the work into the course.

  2. NTA. Plagiarism is a serious thing at a higher educational level…

Your ‘friend’ ultimately puts you BOTH at risk of having grades/scores zero’d or disqualified. Some educational institutions take a hard-line no mess stance and can decide both parties colluded and are at fault… Even if that’s not the case.

If this ‘friend’ is struggling that much due to personal reasons.. that’s not just a can’t be bothered to put the effort in.. they should raise this with their tutor. (To get the appropriate support)

Getting pissy because they can’t leech off your effort is a red flag. Keep your paper secure.. and perhaps send messages to ask them to delete the pictures so you have a ‘paper trail’ should anything kick off.

Congratulations on doing well though 💕

  3. NO, YOU’RE NOT THE IDIOT.
I myself, as an education student, have to deal with classmates who only ask for photos of my summaries and notes and don’t seem to understand that they’re asking for weeks/months of effort because they simply didn’t put in the effort to study. And that’s despite the fact that while I’m studying, I also work in the furniture industry (my dad makes wardrobes and I make/paint children’s wardrobes), so work isn’t an excuse.

  4. Plagiarism aside, how rude and presumptuous of her to start taking photos without even asking you herself

    Also NTA

  5. NTA, is there a way to secure your answers with the professor or a TA by sending them in early? Or was this your answer key after you finished? Like, I’d maybe try to give them a heads up by saying someone took copies of your answers without your permission.

  6. I would inform the lecturer that your classmate took your notes and tried to photocopy them. If there is ANY suspicion that you assisted her in cheating, then you too would suffer the consequences.

  7. I would notify your Uni as soon as you can. Or they may think you gave it to her.
Is it with you getting accused of aiding a cheater and losing your scholarship? Then report.

  8. NTA – that’s pure plagerism. And she Will get caught, and I’m willing to bet that she would try and take you down with her. “Classmate said I could copy her paper”

You do not want that blowback that could end your film career before it gets started.

  9. Hello, university lecturer here. You’re NTA, and I would recommend reporting this to the member of staff teaching your course immediately. If she copies your work for her retest, it will very likely be flagged as plagiarism – and you’ll also be investigated for possible collusion in her cheating.

  10. NTA.

OP I would suggest you get her to delete those photos. Next thing you know, she will claim your work as her own aka plagiarize your work
