My first time posting on here and I’ll keep it short and simple !
I recently asked my boss for a raise and he told me he will do what ever he needs to do. He then told me I need to talk to his boss, so I did & his boss informed me the only way I can get a raise is if they make me the team lead, but to keep it under the table so my co- workers don’t find out & make a fuss about it. To be clear I have more certifications than my other con workers & ive been there the longest. So the big boss told me he will talk to my boss about it so we can get moving so I can get this little raise.
Couple hours pass by and I see my boss talking to his boss, & after his boss left I went up to my boss & asked if the conversation was about me & he said no. So I explained to him everything his boss told me and he just nodded his head. When I asked what he thought he said “I don’t know” and after 5 minutes of asking him what does he mean he doesn’t know he said “I don’t know how to put it in to words what I’m thinking, I don’t want to cuss” . I told him to cuss me out I don’t care. But he insisted on giving him couple days to come up with the right words.
Well 2 days later I saw him and asks him again. He played dumb and said he forgot what we talked about. After 5 minutes of explaining to him what we talked about he said “oh nah you’re good” & again after 10min of telling him he said he was gonn thinking of what to say he kept saying “I don’t wann say the wrong thing. “ so to end the story after 30min conversation with him he said he doesn’t move the money he only makes suggestions. He suggested to his boss I do deserve a raise but not to make me lead. He somehow didn’t understand that is the ONLY way for me to get a raise . When I asked what can I do different to make him change his mind he said “if I tell you then you wouldn’t do it because you want to do it only because I told you.” I then explained to him he his my boss so that’s how it works. Then he said “but you only want to be lead for the money” then I stood there shocked & said “that’s why we’re all here for . Money” the he said I’m doing it for the wrong reasons. I went ahead and left it alone because it’s like talking to a toddler . He didn’t want to be straight with me & he kept saying dumb stuff.

Stop working for that guy immediately. Do whatever you can to find a new role in a new company if you can.
NTA and I would start quietly looking for a new job. You have certifications and experience, start looking for someone who will appreciate that properly. Your boss has no intention of ever promoting you or giving you a raise, and I’m guessing you’re good at your job and make him look good.
They aren’t going to give you a raise and never were. They are gas lighting and manipulating you so you drop it. NTA. Find a new job. ASAP. They have zero respect for you and will actively try to knock you down every chance they can.
NTA. That is literally how promotions work, people seek better payment, this is not a volunteer camp.

NTA. Start looking for another job or switch departments. Whatever gets you away from that guy. As long as you direct boss is there you will never get anything you deserve.
I don’t get why this is in this sub, who accused you or implied you’re TA?
NTA, your boss is really immature and your whole workplace is dysfunctional. You can only get a raise via promotion? But they want it to be secret? Your boss needs days to come up with words (!?) and then pretends he has no idea what you’re talking about? Wanting a raise is “the wrong reason“?
I would start looking. Let the surprised Pikachu face of your boss when you give notice be your motivation.

I’d talk with his boss again and ask for a raise. When he reiterates what he said, briefly explain what your boss said .
Of course, you want more money. The trick to getting the raise is to show them how you getting a promotion will benefit them.
