AITA: Mistakenly thought a female video game character was a man and girlfriend got mad

So I’ve been getting into Battlefield 1 in the past few weeks, and the loading screen when you get in the game is this androgynous soldier person that I thought was a man, and I would often think that my girlfriend would find it funny that this ww1 soldier looked kinda feminine and odd. It’s "in the name of the tsar" from battlefield one.

Anyway I was on call with my girlfriend earlier and I showed her this person and said "why is this dude serving cunt" bc I thought it was just like a funny looking feminine dude. My girlfriend was immediately like "that’s a woman" and started going on about "so you think this woman is pretty? you think she’s serving?" and I kept saying how I genuinely thought this was a dude. She eventually found the model who the character is based on and showed me and kept saying that I thought she was beautiful and serving face. I got mad because to me this was a non issue and she was just starting shit. She hung up on me on valentines day and the whole thing was just so stupid to me but idk am I being unreasonable for this?

  1. That is pretty funny. That is something I would say to my husband. I think she is just messing with you and giving you a hard time.

  2. Let me get this straight, your girlfriend isn’t actually mad that you thought the female character was a dude. She didn’t believe you thought the character was a dude. She was mad because she thought you were commenting that a video game character was pretty. Even if that was the case, throwing a fit over you saying a CARTOON is hot is ridiculous. NTA

  3. NTA

Nope, you are not being unreasonable. As a woman. I think she’s being really, really, jealous for like no reason.

  4. Your commentary on this androgenous figure is hilarious and your gf going bananas over an animated character is the icing on the cake. NTA

  5. NTA bordering on ESH

i kind of interpreted her comments as playful banter? “oh you think a man is pretty? hehe what about this girlllll” but! i wasn’t there.
it seems like something i would tease my guy friends about- them thinking a guy is pretty only for it to actually be a woman.
if she’s actually mad that you thought the guy was serving and is jealous of the model/character, that’s a bit insecure and maybe something to talk about

    1. While I agree with you in part because I am the same way, ive definitely seen some of my adult straight friends get legit mad about something like this which always struck me as genuinely odd. We cant tell tone through text so I guess now we will never be able to say for sure.

I really hope she was joking with him but then got mad about the teasing going over his head lol

      1. yeah i would have to agree with having adult straight friends get upset over this stuff, it’s definitely very odd

alap hoping she’s just mad the joke went over his head and NOT actually insecure like this, but yeah, with the lack of tone over text, we have 0 idea. best of luck to OP though!
