I’m taking this environmental science class at my college to try and fill in a science credit because I failed 4 science classes prior. I happen to have autism and adhd. Anyways, this Instructor always loves to add group work to every assignment and it feels like the class structure was based off of how the subject affects the group work and not the opposite way. As someone that doesn’t work well with the social performance grading method. I told my teacher upfront that I think this is promoting more of dependence than individual growth on the subject. She brushed it off, and said that if I don’t do the group work aspect, I lose 30% of the points. which I understand, but I’m not at the stage I could grade somebody else’s work or peer review it I need to build the foundation, but she wants to make every assignment peer review and group work. I know autism is hated on here, am I the Asshole for reporting the professor to the dean?
>>> because I failed 4 science classes
If you keep failing classes the common denominator is you. Take some personal responsibility and grow up. Autism has nothing to do with it. YTA
YTA. I’ve Adhd myself and struggled. We can’t expect the world to conform to our requirements. I’ve no doubt you will struggle more than most with peer review, but you’ll do your best, and seek help on it as needed. In the real world there’s no equivalent to what you seek here. Focus on what you can control, do your best, and leave the rest to God (or the universe, if you’re non-religious).
YTA. I understand how you want to give yourself the best possible chance of passing after having failed 4 classes already, but reporting the professor to the dean will massively backfire. It is her right to structure the class how she sess fit. If you report her, you’ll have issues with every class after and it will not help you pass.
You will build the foundation by learning. And then you’ll use what you’ve leaent to evaluate what other people learned.
You know autism is hated on here? Never come across that.
You’re on your way to failing your fifth class, you’re the problem here
YTA because I am not sure what you are reporting the professor for. It doesn’t sound like they are breakingany sort of rule or behaving inappropriately. I understand that we all learn differently. In my own teaching I try my best to include a variety of assignment types for that very reason. However, just because a teacher isn’t changing their syllabus specifically to accommodate you does not mean they should be reported to the dean. Because you say “professor” I assume you are at the college/university level. In my experience, such institutions have an office to help students who might need certain accommodations. Have your tried reaching out to them?
If you’re unable to perform a group project, how do you expect to be successful in life and actual work? If your autism and learning disability is so bad that you’re unable to complete group assignments, you may be eligible for disability. What violation exactly would you report the professor?
Oh, I love this argument. I work in a place that is super social related and I love it. I don’t hate group work, I just want to be earned in an academic setting so then the topic the main priority. I feel it’s like a spreadsheet, but they’re marking off.
If you can get disability accommodations from your school to help.
Info: Does your college offer accommodations for ADHD and autism in coursework?
The vast majority of jobs in the world require working with others.
Rarely do you get to choose who you work with, and there will usually be someone who doesn’t pull their fair share, and someone who is a pain in the ass to work with, often more than one of each.
Even if you choose to be self employed, you’ll still have clients who you’ll have to deal with.
Forget what the subject is about, and focus more on this situation as training for the real world.
Complaing to the Dean will get you no further than complaining to your future boss about coworkers will.
What are you reporting them for? Module assignments normally have to be agreed by the university (in my country at least) so the Dean would already know the structure.
I’m autistic and also hate group work. However, if you want to function in life you need to work with other people.
If you have already failed four classes you need to be trying to make life easier for yourself. Challenging the professor and reporting them for their structure isn’t doing that.
If it was a case that you were being excluded or picked on by the group then I would back you, but you haven’t even tried.
YTA.
YTA. Colleges (and by extension professors) are under a lot of pressure to prepare students for future employment. I huge part of most jobs is working in teams, particularly in the sciences. I realize autism and ADHD may make group work harder, but it’s a life skill you need to develop. The appropriate path for you would be talking to the university disability support office to get an appropriate accommodation. Complaining to the dean about a perfectly normal class assignment only makes you seem difficult and unpleasant.
YTA. Im autisic and never asked for ANY accomodations. You sink or swim on the merots of your work. You were given the option, with the same infringement penalty that everyone else gets should they choose that route. You dont get special treatment just because you dont like the way things are done. And let me tell you this. The world will make no accomodations for you unless you are at the tippy top of your field. You arent even close. Drop the attitude. Do the assaignments as required or drop the subject.
