AITAH Crossing the road and beeping!

Am I the asshole?? So today I (M19) was driving and I was just going to turn left into a side road and this runner with headphones (M30s?) didn’t look before crossing, so I gave him a little beep as he crossed and pointed at my eyes and told him to look before crossing – being genuine and looking out for him. I wasn’t trying to be rude or anything just actually helping him out for future as I don’t really want him being splattered like jam.

So after this, I got back to my nans which was down the turning and started to put her shopping away. This guy must have been really petty as he decided it was cool to find my car and run past the open back door and wait for me to look and mimicked what I did to him – I sort of laughed at it because it was rather funny. I then walked outside to get more shopping from the boot and he ran a bit further down turned around and gave me the bird 😂 now why does a man in his 30s run away from a teenager? Was he scared? His adrenaline must have been pumping as that’s most action he probably got all week. Anyways, kept laughing with my girlfriend and I decided to shout to him “I was only looking out for you!” And he kept running.

Does this make me an asshole for looking out for him?

  1. Info: was he in a crosswalk? What are the rules in your jurisdiction, who had the right of way? Where I live the pedestrian almost always has right of way over a turning driver, so YTA if that’s the case.

  2. Yta. Pedestrians ALWAYS have the right of way.  Guarantee it’s in your state’s driving handbook.  If he gets splattered like jam, you’re the one who will end up in jail.

  3. YTA don’t beep at people, just wait! You would have had to give way anyway no need to police other peoples behaviour and besides maybe he did look and you missed it

Pedestrians usually have right of way. I am assuming there was a crosswalk, so the runner expects any car to stop for them. No need to honk at them for no reason.

  5. OP, who do you think has the right of way- a runner crossing the street or a car turning left?

The runner was allowed to get in your way.

YTA for honking at a pedestrian crossing the street.

  6. YTA. Go back to driving school. A pedestrian has the right of way in a crosswalk. This must be a farming post.

  7. ESH Pedestrians have right of way, there was no reason to honk at him. Him following you home is super weird though.

  8. It’s not clear where he was crossing but if he was moving  parallel to you and crossing the road you were turning into then he has the right of way and you must yield.

The drama is all wasted energy.

  9. >now why does a man in his 30s run away from a teenager? Was he scared?

You mean why was a man, who was out for a run, running?

YTA. There was no reason to honk at him, no reason for the patronizing eye gesture, and no reason for the smug d:ck swinging in your post.

  10. YTA. You don’t need to beep and tell people off for not looking especially when it’s their right of way. “Oh I need to beep and shout at people if they don’t look” no.

  11. yta pedestrians have right if way in the uk. you should have stopped and only asshats use their horns all the time

  12. YTA sure you should always look before crossing a street however pedestrians always have right of way at intersections and you should always check for pedestrians crossing/about to cross before turning. You honking at him was totally unnecessary on top of pointing at your eyes and telling him to look before crossing when he would’ve been more justified saying it to you, really makes you look like an AH.

  13. YTA pedestrians have the right of way whether they pay attention to traffic or not. It is YOUR job as the driver to look out for pedestrians

  14. YTA

You’re supposed to stop. Yes, he should look, but that’s meant to be a precaution. Your stopping for him isn’t a favour, it’s literally the law.
