AITA Didn’t finish my food because I glass in it

I was eating rice with my parents and sister as usual when I bit into something hard. I pulled it out and it was literally a thumb sized shard of glass! I was so shocked to be honest. I showed it to my parents and told them I lost my appetite. My mom was trying to convince me to continue eating. Just chew and be careful. I Refused to eat and I told them they shouldn’t eat the rice anymore as well. I felt like I could’ve seriously injured myself if I swallowed it. Who knows if there were smaller glass shards in the rice.

My mom got mad at me for wasting food and she made me feel like I was being dramatic.

Everyone else continued to eat like nothing happened.

I’m just so shocked at how can you wash rice without feeling the glass?

I also researched how one woman died from swallowing glass shards that were in a pickle jar.

AITA? Was I over reacting?

    1. “Oh, that taste of rat poison is no big deal, don’t worry about it. Just keep eating … at least another 100 grams, please.”

    2. Sounds like it. Glass can shred your month, oesophagus, stomach and intestine causing infection. Sepsis in not a pleasant death. OP should have swapped her meal with her mother if it wasn’t a big deal and mother was angry about wastage. NTA.

  1. Thumb sized? How on earth did you not notice a THUMB SIZED piece of glass before you bit down onto it? A thumb is like 2” or more long.

  2. wait. you pulled a thumb-sized piece of glass out of your mouth… and they still expected you to keep eating?

no. absolutely not. that’s not “be careful.” that’s how people end up in the hospital.

glass doesn’t magically come alone. if there’s one big piece, there can be tiny shards you won’t see until they cut you. and once you swallow that? good luck.

and the fact everyone just kept eating like this is normal? that’s the part that’s actually shocking. how are you the dramatic one here?

this isn’t about wasting rice. it’s about not shredding your throat.

you weren’t overreacting. if anything, you were the only one reacting appropriately to literal sharp objects in your food.

    1. NTA

Did she hint as to how the glass may have ended up there? That’s not normal grown up mom behavior. Is she like – bipolar or postpartum or something going on with her mental health you’re aware of?

    2. I feel like if everyone else was completely fine eating the glass infused rice, which can kill you because it can slice your insides…. I kinda feel like hers was the only one with glass in it…… Like deliberately put glass in hers

…… Maybe I’ve watched too much crime shows but I dunno. Seems pretty suspect

  3. If I was your mum I would take the plate away and insist you don’t eat another bite and anyone that had food from the same pot as well

  4. NTA

In fact I would consider your mother’s advice incredibly dangerous.

If broken glass gets anywhere near food, you dispose of it and start again – annoying (and potentially expensive) but definitely preferable to having your tongue and mouth cut, or worse your throat/stomach.

Yes, you can be careful and spit out any hard bits, but glass can break into incredibly small pieces that you will only realistically discover when they cause damage somewhere on your body that could prove really problematic. That is something I definitely wouldn’t be willing to risk.

  5. Okay did it happen to be Costco’s fried rice because I literally just heard today they had a recall on it for glass shards found in some

  6. Was this a fried rice microwave meal? There’s currently a recall on those from multiple companies in the US and Canada because they may contain shards of glass.
