I (19) am an animation head. I love movies and seeing animation the most in media. My parents are the opposite, loving live action movies and not really liking animation at all. With all the live action remakes that have been able to come out, my parents spent more time watching those then they have ever watched the originals before. I have to force them to even watch animated shows and I’ve started to grow pissed that this is what I to do to get them to watch stuff I want to share with them. It has hightened even more now finding out my mom also watches and likes AI slop and will not take my issues into thought and account, as I wish to start my own animated shows and movies myself, but it’s so hard to think about doing that when I’ve just been surrounded by people who can’t appreciate the craft and art that goes into animation. I’ve been very angry about this silently for a long while now, my feelings only getting worse because of the AI shit that is loved more than the hard work all artists put into their craft. I just want to show my parents that animation isn’t stupid or just for little kids, but they won’t even hear me out, saying that they weren’t fans of the shows I watched when I was fucking 10. I feel so upset that that is the only reason they won’t watch shows I love just because, apparently, the shows I liked when I was younger was ass to them. But I feel like a shitheat to feel this way because I do love my parents and, frankly, I feel like I shouldn’t be mad at them for such a stupid thing. So, am I the ass for being upset about this? Any advice on how to deal with these feelings or get my parents to treat my pallet with a bit more respect? I just want to know what to do going forward.
“I have to force them to even watch animated shows and I’ve started to grow pissed that this is what I to do to get them to watch stuff I want to share with them”
…why? What reason is there to force your parents to watch animation that they don’t like?
you have to allow people to have their own tastes. I don’t like animation. YTA don’t force people to like what you like find your people.
No, you do not have to force your parents to watch cartoons. They do not have to understand that animation can be for adults. YTA.
YTA.
You are asking your parents to treat your taste with respect while not respecting theirs.
Nobody’s TA here, although you need to communicate your feelings with your parents before you get upset and pissed at them. They most likely don’t understand the sheer work and skill that goes into animation, and them watching AI slop is a big slap in the face for you.
They should realise after your conversation that watching animation is a way for them to support their child and their passions. At the end of the day though, you shouldn’t force them to watch it. Hope things work out for you xxx
YTA.
I feel for you. You want your parents to appreciate the stuff that seems to mean a lot to you. Its subconsciously a form of approval.
In this case though, enjoyment of entertainment is extremely subjective. And you can’t force anyone to enjoy a specific artistic medium.
Leave them alone. Find your own tribe of like-minded people to enjoy with.

It doesn’t sound like they are bad parents or don’t care about you, they just don’t like animation. It’s understandable to be disappointed but certain things just aren’t for certain people. You can’t force that. Even if you tried and succeeded in getting them to watch something, there is a chance they will automatically not enjoy it because they did it from being pressured instead of wanting too.
Now you said something about “getting your parents to treat your pallet with more respect”, so it’s possible we are lacking info that may change my opinion. But right now it doesn’t sound like there is any disrespect happening? Are they actively discouraging you from watching anything or talking down your interest in going into the field professionally?
I’m sure that if you ever made your own animation, they would watch it as a show of support. And who knows, maybe they will find that they will like it afterall.
Yta. You don’t actually have to force them to watch anything. They have their taste, you have yours.
YTA wtf is wrong with you? Grow up. You like what you like, they like what they like. You can’t force people to be into what you want them to. You sound like my 5 year old niece. Stop using your parents as an excuse for not taking things seriously in YOUR creativity. Now if you were to say they are downplaying YOUR animation or aspirations then yes they would be TA but no. You’re just whining they won’t watch cartoons with you. lol grow up. And this is coming from someone that still watched Saturday morning cartoons.
YTA. They don’t have to like animation, everyone has their own tastes.
Lmao you are a major AH and super weird.
>I have to force them to even watch animated shows
No, you don’t.
Stop trying to shove your tastes down their throats. They don’t like it – get over it.

I would say overreacting. I have a couple of thoughts on why:
1) I know I get deep into my hobbies and when I love something a lot, I am hyper-focused on it and I want others to enjoy it, too. It’s kind of like a person with new-found religion trying to get everyone to join their church. When people aren’t enthusiastic, it’s a bit disappointing. It’s sort of “if they only knew what they were missing, their lives would be better.”
2) It’s possible you are confusing their not liking animation as a judgment of you. While we forever want our parents’ approval, you will realize one day that their approval of 100% of what we do or like will not happen. I realized that in my 60s. Hopefully you will learn it much sooner. 😊
And aren’t you acting a bit like them with your distaste for AI-generated content? What if you had a friend trying to get you to get into AI? It’s really just a matter of opinion and there’s no reason to try to force anyone into liking what you like.
