AITA for asking my neighbor to stop playing electric guitar at 1 am on a weekday??

I live in a pretty calm apartment building and i am usually the type of neighbor who lets things slide, loud conversations whatever, an occasional late night hangout fine, everyday noise totally normal

but about a month ago my neighbor discovered a new passion, the electric guitar, and not during the day, not on weekends, he plays on weeknights from around 10 pm until 1 in the morning, amp on distortion full rock concert mode

at first i thought ok he is just trying new gear, but then a week passed, then two, then three

one tuesday at 12h45 am i could not take it anymore, i knocked on his door politely and said hey sorry to bother you any chance you could stop playing a bit earlier i wake up really early for work and it is almost 1 am

he looked at me like i had crushed his rockstar dreams and replied this is the only time he can play, he is not doing anything wrong, if i have sleep issues that is not his problem

the next day i found a note in my mailbox that said « music is freedom, silence is prison »

i do not know if he thinks he is hendrix or some kind of philosopher but honestly i was stunned

so now i am wondering, AITA for asking a grogne adult to stop playing electric guitar at 1 am on a weekday or am i being too strict?

  1. Tell the guitar guy he needs to get headphones. If he plugs them in correctly, the sound no longer comes out of the speaker but goes into his headphones. You can sleep, and he can rock on until he drops. If he won’t use headphones and doesn’t stop his musical hell in the small hours, you can check your local noise ordinance with the police and even complain to the apartment management. Pretty sure there should be noise levels everyone must abide by.

  2. The best part about electric instruments is that you can listen to them with headphones.

Send him back a note saying:

“Music is freedom. Headphones are the key.”

Otherwise, report him to the building manager.

  3. NTA. Most apartments have quiet hours. I would check your lease agreement. For your sake, I hope he’s at least a decent player. 🙄 Like others suggested, headphones are the best solution. That’s what I use for my electric instruments when I don’t want to bother anyone.

  4. Nta. I’d just call the nonemergency number going forward. He’s going to assume it’s you, but if he’s bugging you, he’s bugging others.
