AITA for backing out of bday plans because I am not comfortable with them?

My friend is celebrating their birthday and bought concert tickets without asking me. It is to a god awful country concert and I barely drink and have early morning commitments tomorrow.

I feel at an impasse here. On one hand I am told I don’t socialize enough, and it would obviously be important to them and the friendship were I to go, but on the other hand we are mid-thirties and getting too old for this shit! I am trying(!) to watch my sleep / overall health and am careful with money due to insane cost of living. Am I the asshole for leaving them stuck with the tickets and no company?

Do I just go and obliterate my wallet, liver, and next day plans? Help!

  1. NTA. It’s rude to buy tickets to an event without confirming your availability and desire to go. Don’t deny your self-care to save the feelings of someone who didn’t even ask if you were down to attend. A real friend wouldn’t expect you to cross personal boundaries like that.
