So 2 weeks ago my roommate (let’s call her K – 20F) and I (20F) were cleaning and opened the communal fridge to find syringes belonging to our other roommate (21F – let’s call her B). We knew they belonged to B because she’s the only one who used that fridge (roommate and I have our own fridge in our bedroom). I looked up what they were and found out that the syringes were actually spore colonies for growing shrooms, so, not wanting to get in trouble in case anyone else found them, K and I reported her to our residence director on that following Monday.
Going into it, I wasn’t even thinking what might happen, I thought that maybe the worst would be that the syringes would be confiscated from B and she’d be fined, but because they are a Class C drug in my state, B was arrested and has been charged with 2 counts of possession with intent to distribute. The police spoke to K and I and told us that they found not only the syringes but a whole lot of cash and other drugs like shroom chocolates and concluded that B was growing magic mushrooms under her bed and selling to others. K and I never knew about any of that stuff, only the syringes.
I know we did the right thing by reporting her, but I can’t help but feel incredibly bad. B is an international student and has had our housing contract terminated with our university and because of the felony charges there is a very good chance she will have her visa revoked and will be deported. I never intended for her to be arrested and all this, and she’s been speaking to my friends telling them not to trust me and that I’m lying about her. Truthfully, K and I did tell a couple friends what had happened but we NEVER said anything more than what the police told us and I NEVER told anyone unprompted except for my mom and sisters.
I know we did the right thing but I still can’t help but feel like I ruined this girl’s life.
TL;DR: I got my roommate arrested for drug possession and she may be deported because of it.
EDIT: to clear up a couple things (and grammar)…
\- we had spoken to her multiple times previously about leaving things (alcohol, vapes, etc) out in the open and it was tough getting her to listen then
\- the fridge is COMMUNAL shared between us in our dorm suite. She is the only one who used it only because K and I have one we brought, but that fridge is accessible to all of us
\- B had a roommate (C) and he would have found out about what she had in their room considering they share a room. Regardless of if C found what was in their bedroom or what was in the fridge (which, again, is accessible for ALL of us), it would have eventually been reported at some point
EDIT 2:
Like I said, I never WANTED her to get in this much trouble, but we had spoken to B multiple times before this about keeping stuff of that sorts out of the dorm. Both K and I are here on scholarships and cannot risk getting in trouble with the law. I feel absolutely terrible, I’m literally on the verge of tears and I had a panic attack the day after B was arrested. I didn’t know she’d be arrested, I really don’t know the severity of different drugs, the most I have ever used is THC for my chronic pain and a quarter of a Percocet after I had surgery.
NTA. You didn’t ruin this girl’s life. She did. And she was fully prepared to ruin yours, by keeping her drug-related stuff in your apartment. It’s unfortunate, but to grow and distribute drugs from your shared apartment (especially your shared refrigerator, which everyone had access to) puts all of you at risk, and fortunately it was only she who got in trouble.
