AITA for not letting my in-laws do laundry at my house?

For context I have bought them a house. My brother in law is 50 and works retail with no ambition. He totes my wife’s parents around. The house I bought them I take care of. Mowing lawns and yard work. Fixing anything that breaks. They have washer and dryer hook up but they never have money. It’s almost as if they could be given a million dollars and still be broke. The reason I don’t want them to do laundry here is because they have no respect for my things. Overloading the washer. Putting shoes in my dryer. Just irresponsible behavior. I told them last week that they can just go use a laundry mat. AITA for telling them to do that?

  1. NTA. Seems like you’ve already gone above and beyond. Maybe suggest they get a used washer and dryer from Craigslist etc?

    1. Yeah, I was going to say this… is your peace of mind worth a scratch and dent W/D? Habitat for humanity ReStores or other salvage/reuse stores are good places to look too, and obvs Craigslist as PSAlearn2swim noted

  2. YANTA – your house your rules. At one point you have to put your foot down. They can’t get all over you, what will be next. Let me guess they will stop paying the rent? Stay away, stay low respect yourself.

  3. I once let a friend who lived near me whos washer broke to do some laundry. He got done, noticed the next day my washer stunk. Looked in there, and there was a jersey mikes giant sized turd in my washer. Like one of those combo turds that’s a bunch of rabbit turds that somehow all formed one giant log. Anyways. Questioned him, he denied it. Been 25 years, no one has used my washer since. NTA

  4. WTF? You bought them a house…. They have a laundry yet won’t use it? You do everything around the house? And still they are leeching off you ?
    Fuck that.
    Tell them to rack off.

What country do you live in? What nationality are you? This sort of carry on is NOT normal in my country

    1. To clarify it sounds like the house has a hook up for washer and dryer but no actual washer or dryer. It sounds like they don’t have money to buy a washer and dryer.

Still NTA but just clearing up that it sounds like they don’t have their own washer or dryer at this time.

      1. He’s bought them a whole fucking house AND does all maintenance. And they sound like they have jobs… yet still can’t buy a washing machine? Fuck off with that. That’s just being total useless users. They are probably waiting for him to buy then a washing machine!!!!
        Total leeches. Total parasites

  5. NTA

So you have given them a house and provide all of the maintenance?

Why in the world are you questioning whether these people who are abusing your largesse – not to mention causing the inevitable premature death of your washer and dryer – should be told they aren’t welcome.

What is your wife’s opinion because if she is into enabling them your setting boundaries will be futile

  6. I call it the unfillable black hole… 🕳️

Not enough money in the world to solve their money problems – because the problems aren’t money.
