AITA for refusing to drop a song from my bands setlist?

Im(21m) in a band with my roommates(25f, 26f, 27f). It’s a pretty cool setup, it makes band practices easy. We play pretty much all original songs at our gigs with only one cover.

Technically, its 2 separate songs but the first song is an intro to the second. The covers are Intruder and Oh Pretty Woman by Van Halen and we play those at the start of each show. We do it that way because intruder is an instrumental and it has a bunch of random noise in it and we drag it out a little bit. Then, right when people are just about to start booing, we transition into Oh Pretty Woman. We do that because we think its awsome as an opener.

We did a gig at a local festival and we opened our set with intruder and oh pretty woman. We had the lights qued up for the show, too. After the show, my step brother(22m) pulled me aside and accused me of trying to steal his girlfriend(22f) because apparently, Oh Pretty Woman is his girlfriends favorite song. I explained that it wasn’t anything like that and that the only reason we played that song is because we think that Oh Pretty Woman, along with Intruder work great as opening songs. He asked if we could drop oh pretty Woman from our set because he doesn’t like how much bis girlfriend loves that song but I said no. Oh Pretty Woman a song that all of us really like, and it just sounds good when we play it. He called me a dick and stormed off and he didn’t talk to me for the rest of the day.

Now I’m wondering if I should just drop it to keep the peace. AITA for refusing to drop a song from my bands setlist?

Edit: my spelling

  1. When your stepbrother starts paying you to be his personal house band, then he can make requests about your setlist. Until then, he can pound sand. It’s none of his freaking business what your setlist is. Play what you want, and tell your stepbrother to grow up. NTA.

  2. NTA. What the heck? Im guessing the gf must have said something about you being cool and in a band (in a normal friendly way) and SB took jealousy to DEFCON-1.
What if you drop that song and then he breaks up with her? Or you play another song and “Oh, that’s not good either because she dreams of her future husband singing her that song”?
Screw that noise and stay firm in your decision.

Your step brother is weird. If you drop this song to keep the peace, next he’ll ask you to stop singing because his GF likes songs.

  4. NTA. You can’t even make the call to change the set list as only 1/4th of the band, can you? Seems like a pretty selfish ask. Is he calling radio stations and movie producers, asking them not to use Oh Pretty Woman ever again? Is he worried that girlfriend will suddenly fall for you because you know how to play a song?

    His insecurity isn’t your problem.

  5. Tell stepbrother that your introduction has been approved by your band members and you’ve been playing it for a while now. If he doesn’t like it, that’s too bad and you don’t have your show up at my gigs. He really is an AH.

  6. NTA but I think your band mates would get a say in if a song gets dropped. Probably more so than your step brother. Tell him to duck off.

  7. This guy is an insecure asshole and you are living the dream. I am unsure what drives anyone to try and duplicate the great Roy Orbison, or to duplicate a duplicate a version of the song that is arguably superior to the original, because that would take some doing, but I digress. I hope you are having a lot of fun with your band.

  8. They were booing Intruder? You need to find a better class of audience.

Anyway, your brother needs to up his game if a single song is all it takes for his girlfriend to leave him.

  9. So… no one is allowed to play that song…ever? Like does he call the radio stations and ban it, has he told Spotify to remove it? I mean Roy Orbison is dead, so I guess thats taken care of…

Your brother is ridiculous. And majorly insecure, does he really think his girlfriend is going to go all groupie and throw herself at you?

A good boyfriend would be encouraging you to play it more so his gf can enjoy listening to it live… is he always jealous of you?

The only way your brother would get any opinion on how you open your set list is if A) he’s in the band, or B) your conjoined twins and his girlfriend’s been making eyes at you…

I’m betting neither applieds, so tell him to go kick rocks barefoot.
