AITA for “replacing” a friend in a gaming group?

Okay, so this feels very stupid but it has caused a lot of drama, so bear with me.

A group of us play an online game that takes about 35-40 minutes on average to play. One member of the group, we’ll call him Jack, said that he could probably play one or two if we started soon. We agreed to play in half an hour.

Half an hour comes around and we all gather to play. Well, four out of five of us do. It turns out that, ten minutes before the scheduled meeting time, the fifth member (we will call him Bob) had started a game on his own. At best, we assumed we would need to wait 25 minutes for his game to finish. Jack was frustrated and said he didn’t have time, so he would just get off. I suggested we find another person to play for one game and then Bob could play the second game, once his game was done. That way Jack and Bob could both play.

We found someone else and started a game. I messaged Bob and told him that Jack couldn’t wait for his game to finish, but said Bob could take my spot for the next game. Well, Bob was very upset that we did not wait for him and said he would not play a second game and was not going to play with our group at all.

I think it would have been unfair to Jack if he got off without playing, because Bob chose not to be patient and wait 10 minutes for the group. But now people in our friend group are taking sides and it is becoming a big issue. So, am I/are we the assholes?

  1. NTA 25 mins is a long time to wait. Some people don’t have the free time like that. Expecting 4 people to wait is unreasonable

  2. I think you need to list the facts for people so they can see how much of a nom issue this is:

Bob understood that Jack couldn’t play just yet and there was a wait.
Bob decided he couldn’t wait either and started a game by finding other people to play with.
Bob thinks you’re in the wrong for starting the game at the agreed on time.

Sorry … Isn’t wuer Bob did the exact same thing yes blaming you for?

Maybe you guys should be MAD AT HIM for starting a game with other people instead of with you.

My personal message for Bob: if you can’t take it, don’t dish it out!

  3. Bob did not care for Jack’s time. NTA

There was an agreed upon time at which the game would start, Bob fucked up by not being there when that time rung. Bob can shut his cake hole and be on time next time 🫶

  4. Bob is overly sensitive about others waiting for him when he clearly didn’t wait for others. What were you all supposed to do just sit on your asses while he finished his game? Goof around in custom and waste Jack’s limited time? What even was his argument to you guys?

Finding a random to queue up while waiting for one person to finish their existing game is and has been a thing since forever and if Bob gets angry at such standard practice then perhaps he can play the rest of his games solo.

Nobody replaced him either, if that’s what he thinks happened.

NTA find yourself a more grown person to play with

  5. I’ve been ‘Bob’ – waiting for my game night buddies to log on I’ve thought “Ah… I can get a quick game in with some randos…” only to find a game that normally takes 15-20 minutes has loaded that one map that takes 25 minutes minimum & the randos aren’t getting their s\*\*\* together so it’s taking even longer… and my buddies are waiting for me… and I don’t want to drop as we’re *SO CLOSE* to finishing the round & i don’t want to be ‘that guy’ that bails when it gets tough…

I think ‘Bob’ is the AH here…

  6. 50 year old long time gamer here. Bob needs a word with himself. He either leaves his lobby when the group is ready or the group moves on.

  7. Uh…didnt Bob not wait for everyone else? But he expects everyone to wait for him?

And…its just a game. He could have played, but chose to be a drama queen about it. NTA. Get a better friend.
