AITA for snapping at people who say my wife is with me for money because I’m in the military?

I’m a military serviceman and receive financial compensation because of my job.
Some people in our extended family and social circle have made repeated comments suggesting that my wife is only with me because of the money I earn from military service. They’ve said things like she’s “benefiting” from my situation or that she’s “lucky.”
At first, I tried to ignore it. However, during a recent conversation, one person said it again in front of others. I lost my temper and reacted sharply. I raised my voice and told them they were being disrespectful, that they had no right to judge our relationship, and that they should keep those opinions to themselves.
After that, the mood changed. A few people later told me I overreacted, embarrassed everyone, and should have stayed calm or just let it go instead of confronting them so aggressively.
I still believe defending my wife was the right thing to do, but I’m questioning whether the way I handled it was wrong.
So, AITA for snapping at them instead of staying calm or letting it go?

  1. NTA. First off it is none of their damn business. Second, it is insulting to both of you. They are calling her a gold digger and saying you aren’t good enough to get her on your own merits. That’s cruel. Third, I have served in the military and its not like you are rolling in dough here. Sure, good solid stable income and benefits but its not like you’re a millionaire here.

Lastly, if people are embarrassed because they are called out on their poor behavior then that’s on them. Now, perhaps there are more calm way of handling things and I would encourage you to examine the level of aggression you showed because that could be alarming. But for saying something and standing up at all, you are entirely in the right to do so.

  2. NTA.

Ask these brain trusts how many millionaires they’ve met who are military. Good grief. Don’t people think any more?

  3. NTA. My parents kinda dealt with this back when they got married. The military has many benefits including health insurance, housing allowance and decent pay (debatable I know), but family thought they received a lot more than that including free postage stamps and a bunch of other imagined benefits.
