So I (19f) am a low level manager at a popular hotel chain. I have worked there for about a year.
For my entire time working there I have worked with this women, let’s call her Sam (32f). She made my work life hell for the first few months I worked there, always picking on me and undermining my position and acting like she had authority over me even tho we had the same job title and cus she’s older I guess. Now I’m her manager she still hates me don’t get me wrong, but is careful with what she says around me now.
I found out very early in my time working there that Sam was having an affair with another married coworker of mine, another manager in the hotel. I know this as a former employee at the hotel who I was friendly with had access to the company’s computer logs and Sam had forgotten to sign out of her instagram account on the computer, where her messages to this manager were up, including some very revealing images and texts. This person took screenshots (which I was at the time uncomfortable with). I kept this to myself however, even after becoming manager. This also gave me insight into why she hated me so much. Sam hates all the younger women she works with because she thinks her affair partner will fancy us more I guess.
So a new girl started at work recently, freshly 18 and much like me when I first started. She’s extremely sweet and nervous clearly but getting the hang of things very quickly. Sam immediately pounced. She treats her exactly how she treated me when I first started, just generally being cruel and unkind. The girl was clearly upset and hit hard by this. I pulled her aside one shift and talked to her about it, telling her to not listen to Sam and that she’s doing great, and to come to me if she had any issues. I then talked to Sam telling her to back off the girl and to report to me with any issues and to not be so condescending. Sam didn’t listen I guess and last week I found the girl crying in the back. I comforted her and allowed her to head home early, telling her I would deal with it. (I really see a lot in this girl and we have quickly become friends, so I guess I am biased)
I pulled Sam aside again and told her to stop treating people so badly. Sam got angry and began saying stuff about how technically she had authority as she’s been there longer etc and had more ties to management…
I said that I knew all about her ties to management, and asked if she thought our owner would be happy to hear about her ties with her affair partner. She got very quiet all of a sudden. I said that if I ever heard of her tormenting the girl again I would tell the owner about it, and that u have receipts to prove it.
Listen I’m not exactly proud of this, but Sam has been nice to me and the girl since. However I do feel bad and am wondering if I went too far.
TL:DR- told a staff member that I would tell upper management about her affair with a married coworker unless she started being nicer to a new hire of ours.
