AITA for talking back to guy in coffee shop

Was in line at a coffee shop earlier today both baristas were pretty busy, I was standing a little back from the counter waiting for them to come over to take my order. A guy jumped in front of me and I just harmlessly said to him sorry I’m just in line here. I could tell immediately he was pissed after I said this. He then said you are in line standing back there why are you doing that, that is bizarre in a very dismissive tone. I was a bit taken aback by this and just said to him you’re bizarre and then ordered. Nothing more came of it but I felt pretty unsettled drinking my coffee for the next five minutes after this. I feel it was a little overly aggressive on his part.

  1. NTA he thought you were waiting for your order not to make the order, you were fine to say something, and his reaction was not great but some people get really defensive when they make a mistake. I bet his parents were horrible to him about getting stuff wrong as a kid.

    1. Eh idk about that, that OP was actually in line if they were too far back.

I have often been in front of the counter but further back when I’m still deciding what I want and don’t step up until I’m  ready, and seen others do the same thing.

  2. man’s probably just embarrassed he didn’t realise you were waiting in line and instead of apologising he decided to get defensive and be rude, should have said no need to be rude you can stand in line behind me heheh

  3. ESH, why are you standing so far away? It’s not his job to guess if the line started wherever you’re standing. Were you just standing on your phone or clearly engaged and about to order?

  4. He may have been pissed- but you did the right thing by speaking up. Feeling unsettled doesn’t mean you did something wrong- it’s just that it was uncomfortable.

  5. Thank you for standing back. I was paying with a debit card one time. The guy behind me was practically leaning over my shoulder, and I wasn’t about to enter my PIN under those circumstances. This was even before I graduated to Grumpy Old Lady status. He got told to back off and I just stood there waiting, facing him with my arms crossed. It took complaints from the people stacking up behind him to make him shuffle back a few steps.

  6. NTA. Standing a step back from the counter while baristas are busy is normal, polite behavior. Cutting in line and then getting defensive when called out is what’s actually bizarre.
