Okay for some context. Im a 17 year old male and still on school. My teacher (a 34 year old woman) is highly religous and teaches biologie. You can already see the problem. Well at the start of the year everything was just normal for a while until about 5 months into the school year and we Where about to start on the subject of evolution. Me and my class came in like every normal day. Our teacher came in And she started with atendance which is normal. After she started the lesson, but every time she said some about how evolution was done over millions of years she Would scoff or roll her eyes in a very obvious manner. After finishing one part of the lesson she sort of snapped and started telling us a speach about how “this school is teaching the wrong things and separating us from God”. Our whole class sat in silence while she went on and on about how god is the one and only reason we are here. You could see people where becoming unconfortable ( our class was mixed so we had kids with different religions and views). One of the kids put up there hand and asked if we could get back to tye lesson and the teacher snapped at her to “shut her trap and listen to her teachings”. At that point i had more then enough so stood up just yelled at her to “stop talking about her religion, because no one here wants to hear about that. We are Here for education not a speach about how god is the best thing ever”. I may have yelled at her abit to much (we already had a bad relastionship). And she got mad and told me to get out and come back after class. Well I sat outside the class for the remainder of the period. When she called me back inside she gave me 4 days detention for “talking back” and “having an atitude”. I went home fumming. I told my mother and she says I could have handeld it better. Could have done some better or was I in the right here?
“biologie”
NTA, people like that have no business teaching.
Nope. Made up.
Could easily be a fake story but I have first-hand experience from years ago with teachers (in, yes, a public American high school) who would use their class time to spread religious propaganda much like that. They weren’t supposed to but they did anyway and nobody stopped them.
NTA but you really need to pay attention in your English class. Grammar, correct spelling, and punctuation are your friends
NTA , I wouldn’t bother going to them detentions either if I was you I would try to appeal or speak to a higher member of staff about this.
NTA. You could have handled it better, but the teacher should have stuck to the lesson. A more appropriate course would have been to report her to administration. You should still go to the school principal and explain what happened. The teacher needs to be monitored to make sure she sticks with the lesson plan and not go off on a religious rant.
NTA I would have marched over to the principles office while I was put outside and informed them about the teacher trying to instill religion into the class session though.
2 things are true.
1) You absolutely could have (and should have) handled it better. If you yelled at her detention is appropriate.
2) NTA.
ESH. Her for the obvious reasons.
You are justified in being upset that your learning time was wasted by a teacher who refused to teach the subject.
You are not justified in losing your temper. And strategically, yelling at people is usually a bad idea – it never helps you change the situation, and it often lets the other person frame you as a rude/disrespectful/unreasonable person who can’t be trusted, and so get away with their own wrongdoing.
If you had kept your temper through the lesson, you could have documented how bad she was being and taken the proof that your lesson was nonproductive to your regular teacher, or to the school’s head teacher/principal. You could also have teamed up with the other pupils to put pressure on the school.
NTA. You need to tell other teachers what she’s doing and if they do nothing then go higher. You’re at the biology class to learn about biology not get yelled at about Christianity.
NTA. Teachers are not supposed to use their religious beliefs to shape hold they teach their subject unless you’re at a religious school.
You can report the teacher to the school, the school board, and her state board of licensing.
Not the question, but your teacher is definitely an asshole.
I respect that you spoke up. But you lost your cool, yelled, and were disrespectful. Now she (and others) can just dismiss you for being disrespectful.
Be respectful and logical when you speak up. A simple, neutral question (will the material about religion be on the test?) often does the trick and will garner support from your classmates. I don’t actually think you’re an asshole, but this would have been a clear win for you if you handled it differently. So I guess you’re kind of an asshole. Sorry.
NTA, and I would take this to the school principal, Demand, a different teacher who can actually teach the subject. Tell them you will not return to this class or detention.
If they push back, tell them that they are violating your civil rights and are confident that an attorney would love to hear your story(dont mention this if they agree to work with you).
