AITA for telling my sister her baby name is horrible

I26m have a younger sister19. She’s expecting her first child two days after Christmas. She’s been keeping her babies name a secret. I came to see her to bring her some of my kids old baby stuff and she finally wanted to tell me the baby’s name. She wants to go with Cristmas. She says it’s super unique and festive and they can call him Chris for short. I thought she was kidding so I laughed at first, but she was serious. I told her that name is horrible and he’ll be picked on. She got upset and said that was mean and it’s too late to change it. I told her it’s not too late, and even gave her a few list of baby names on Google Christmas related. She got even more upset by this and then googled how many people are named Christmas and apparently it’s a thing.

I ended up leaving because she got upset. Later on she texted me asking me if I really think it’s so terrible and how she was so excited to tell us the name and now she feels pressured to rethink it. AITA

  1. NTA

You’re doing that baby a huge favor.

Might have been a bit more diplomatic, as “horrid” is a strong word.

Sounds like you got through to her though. She’ll thank you one day.

  2. My youngest sister is named Christmas. She has always hated it, and resents the fact that her mother (we’re half-sibs) didn’t think about what her life would be like, only how cute it would be to have a baby named Christmas. NTA.

    1. The ‘super unique’ baby name trend is a curse. If parents are incapable of empathizing with their own kids about what this name will be like then maybe they should consider how they would react to having a co-worker with that name. This is a human not a house pet.

      1. With my oldest, my wife was obsessed with unique names. She didn’t go as far as Cristmas though, But I had to talk her down from the name Sunday for weeeeks.

Did you have to do it every day of the week?

          Maybe even twice on Sundays?

  3. NTA. People with birthdays close to Christmas tend to have a hard time with their birthday celebration being overshadowed.

Having your entire identity shaped around Christmas as well? Oof, that poor kid!

  4. Nta and god if i was a christmas baby the last thing i’d want is to be called christmas 😭 you did the kid a huge favour imo

  5. The Bond girl in The World is Not Enough is named Christmas Jones. Her opening line is, “Don’t make any jokes, I’ve heard them all.”

    NTA.

      1. Or Christopher, or even Christian! All can be shortened to Chris, and as a baby she can call him Christmas as a pet name without subjecting him to it his whole life.
