AITA if I leave food water & a makeshift dog bed on my front porch for my neighbor’s two tiny dogs that my family keep seeing out in the middle of the night when the weather tonight is 11° f? These dogs have been left out many nights where the temps are well below 30° & we are worried that they are going to freeze to death. I don’t plan on keeping them I just want to be able to bring them inside while the temps are this low at night. I’ve recently saw them & they looked in bad shape/horrible.
NTA. There should be resources in your town/city you can call to report this. It’s not okay to leave chihuahuas outside in freezing temperatures at all
NTA. Bring them inside.
They are not Chihuahuas they seem more like Yorkshire terriers. We have called animal control in the past during the summer when it was over 100° and they were running around with no food or water available to them. But by the time animal control gets to the neighborhood the dogs are hiding somewhere. I live in a large neighborhood with many houses and wooded areas behind all the houses. Which makes it difficult for animal control to find two tiny dogs running around. What I’m actually considering is if I’m able to get them in my home calling animal control first thing in the morning and notifying them of my actions and then surrendering on them if need be two animal control.
So if you are not able to keep them, then I’m not sure you are the person to handle this. It depends on your animal control. Do you have a no-kill shelter where the dogs will go? If so then this is fine. If not, then I think you should find someone who can keep them first before you grab them. Good luck! Thank you for taking care of those sweet babies!
NTA. Keep the little bubbies safe and call the non-emergency police line in your jurisdiction to report the neighbors for animal cruelty. They should not be allowed to have pets.
definitely report them.
Have you tried talking to your neighbor? Do they know that the dogs are getting out? I’m asking bc my dogs will dig a hole under the fence to get out from the backyard, and I don’t always catch it fast enough. And, if my neighbors see my dogs outside, they will bring the dogs home, or tell me where they last saw them.
I have spoken to them many times last winter and summer. The dogs are out more than they are in and there’s no fence on the yard. They said that the dogs are the kids responsibility. And we’re talking about upper elementary maybe middle school age kids. Upper elementary Middle School age kids are not up at midnight in the middle of the week. I feel like the adults should be taking responsibility when it comes to this level of neglect.
You’re right. The dogs care shouldn’t be left to children. I’d definitely report it.
NTA Bring them inside.
Bring them inside. NTA.
Is that not illegal where you are??
It is completely illegal to do what they’re doing; however, unless you have video proof with time stamps, of what’s going on and you can prove that it has occurred on multiple occasions, animal control and the police cannot do very much about it. They also need to be able to find the dogs in the middle of the night outside of these freezing temperatures. This is challenging to do because these dogs are scared all the time of humans and animals and tend to hide. Because they’re so small it’s even harder to find them than it would be with a larger dog. I personally don’t have a ring camera on my house so I can’t provide video evidence of what’s going on.
