AITA for wanting to file a noise complaint on my upstairs neighbor

28M here and this is my first real apartment and I moved in around April or May so about 8 months now and I live on the ground floor of a 3 story building. Our place has quiet hours after 10pm but since the day I moved in the people above me have been loud almost every night with stomping and running and heavy thuds and I’m pretty sure its mostly kids because that’s how it sounds. For the first few months they sorta slowed down when I tapped the ceiling but I only ever do a light knock just to say hey its too loud not like banging or anything. But the last 3 months they don’t care at all and the noise goes from like 11pm to 2am and I got recordings of a bunch of nights because it keeps happening. I haven’t made a official complaint yet because I get bad anxiety and I’m honestly scared of getting in trouble or somehow getting kicked out since this is my first place and I don’t wanna screw anything up. I’ve only made around 5 maintenance requests total so its not like I’m a problem tenant. Last night tho was the worst because around 11 they started blasting music on top of the stomping and I actually went upstairs and knocked but nobody answered. Now I’m just tired and stressed and don’t know what else to do because I just wanna sleep and live normal but I also don’t wanna seem petty or like I’m starting drama. So AITA for wanting to finally make a noise complaint after dealing with this for months.

  1. NTA, you knocked on their door to try to talk to them first and they ignored you, they know what they’re doing, kids are loud so that part isn’t their fault, but the music and general noise is something they can control.

  2. Go back on your contract regarding your tenancy agreement and find out what the policy and procedures are with this situation. You have recordings and evidence to back yourself up. End of the day i get you dont want to cause trouble but this needs to be dealt with otherwise your neighbours will continue to think this behaviour is acceptable.

  3. NTA, not remotely. You’re entitled to the peaceful enjoyment of your unit, especially in a place with designated quiet hours. File the official complaint — after all, how much worse do you want it to get before you put an end to it?

  4. No, you’re not the asshole you’ve been patient for months, you tried communicating politely, you gathered proof, and the noise is happening during hours when quiet is expected. Filing a complaint isn’t starting drama, it’s using the proper process to fix a problem that’s affecting your sleep, routine, and well-being. You’re not asking for anything unreasonable just for them to follow basic noise rules like everyone else.
