Me and my husband like to talk about baby names if we ever have one. Tonight we got in a heated argument because I honestly truly want to name my future son Lucifer. I think it is a powerful, and beautiful name, despite peoples/societies misconceptions about the name. The name actually means light bringer and i just think it is beautiful. He thinks if I name the child lucifer it would be bullying, selfish of me, and “dumb” because no one names their child that name and that I would be setting the child up for being bullied in school and they would eventually hate me for it. He feels really affirmed because when we tlak about baby names with friends they have all happened to think that it is a bad choice of name. But honestly, I dont r5eally care. I acknowledge their opinion, but I think I shouldnt be scrutinizedf for naming a kid a name that I think is beautiful and is honestly harmless. Personally, I think the name is misunderstood and if someone were to bully a child for that its the child that it is bullying’s fault. If the kid ends up growing up and wanting to change their name, sure. But I dont think I should be called dumb, and lacking self awareness if I want to name my c hild lucifer.
Additional thoughts:
I understand that some people might consider naming a child Lucifer to be cruel, but I believe that reaction stems from judgment rather than actual harm. If someone mocks or judges a person—especially a child—because of their name, the problem lies with that behavior, not the name itself. By the time we would have children, I also hope the world will be more accepting of differences. And if it isn’t, I believe I would raise my child to understand the meaning and beauty of their name and to feel confident standing up for themselves.
This may be a stretch, but I see a parallel in how many Asian immigrants adopt an “English name” because it’s easier for others to pronounce or more socially acceptable. In both cases, the pressure to conform comes from society, not from anything inherently wrong with the original name.
